It didn’t fail, it was a success.

“We are really pleased with the success of our two current RPGs, `Quest 64' and `Granstream Saga,'" said Michael Haller, senior vice president, THQ.”

Masterpiece game that will transcend time as one of the greatest forgotten relics.
It will remain a success to those who knew its splendor.

it needed too high of an iq to fully understand

It was a buggy piece of shit. Still a good ass game tho

I remember rubber banding the joystick when I went to sleep to max out agility, good times

why didn't they make a quest 65 then?

>corporate man in suit say words, those words obviously true
>corporate man in suit have no reason to lie or mislead to save face for company

I’m pretty sure it was successful. It’s a hard game to go back and play though because it’s unintuitive as fuck. Really was a fun ride though. Beat it once when I was younger and the last few parts of the game are pretty great

Fuck the ice cavern

Quest 64 is one of those games I never got to play but instead only watched older kids from my neighborhood play. So I would imagine what the different levels were really like in my head. Going back to play it for myself would be weird because I know it'd be totally different than what I remember. It's an abstract kind of feel.

THQ greenlit more RPGs because Quest made them money. The Japanese developer Imagineer also greenlit more RPGs because Quest made them money. It’s not a lie if the company literally followed up with more in the same genre and was posting record profits in 1997-1998. Sorry I didn’t realize Zig Forums was so retarded that making money ≠ success

they literally made 2 more games in the series afterwards, no one would do that if the game was a total flop

If you have the numbers to show Q64 was a commercial success then ok, but just linking what an exec said at the time about the game's commercial performance doesn't really mean anything

Quest64 sold enough to warrant another game on the Gameboy, OP.

The issue is that Holy Magic Century was still an unfinished game with a ridiculous amount of untapped potential. Imagine if we had the spells affect the environment, line of sight with trees, or even better, creating Line of Sight with the environment (Rocks, creating steam).

It had a lot of potential. Also being able to move on enemy attacks to dodge was something they should've elaborated on. Would've been really cool to have jumping and mobility increase spells to dodge enemy attacks.

it kinda did but didn't, it was one of those starting out pokes in the dark for 3D RPGs, more of a stepping stone game rather than the big game that shows off the limits of the hardware and ideas at the time
for what its worth though it is still a very solid game

For the three months ended June 30, 1998, net
sales of Quest 64, (the Company's second Nintendo 64 title), WCW vs. NWO for the
Nintendo 64, WCW Nitro for the Sony PlayStation, World Cup 98 for the Game Boy,
and The Granstream Saga for the Sony PlayStation were $13,547,000 (46.2% of the
net sales), $3,742,000 (12.8% of net sales) $3,096,000 (10.6% of net sales),
$2,627,000 (9.0% of net sales), and $2,132,000 (7.3% of net sales),
respectively.

Get BTFO fag. Learn to do actual research yourself

I haven't played it in a really long time, I should again at some point.
>that first time you found out about grinding your tankiness on the slimes in front of the windmill coastal village
first mob in the game that hit more than 3 times per attack, and they hit 6 times, and the hits were weak as shit
couple hours there and you were immortal

American version was hot garbage because it wasn't finished. Got pushed out the door way early. Jap version has tons more balancing, a whole ass epilogue, and bunches of fixed systems.

I hate this retarded meme that a game isn't a success if it doesn't have a sequel. Not everything needs a sequel.

this is one of the times where the remake is better than the original
>walking from the town towards the castle
>battle
>end battle
>keep walking
>you end up back in the town

The real shame about this game failing is other N64 games chose to have a messy clutter visual style when they should have looked like this. If Quest 64 had been a success then more games would have tried to have a clean and neat visual style and wouldn't have aged like milk

If you stand still for a second after combat the camera will reposition itself to the direction you were going before the fight.

This was THE game to continue renting from BlockBuster and getting absolutely nowhere in it. I was 7 at the time and kinda regarded though.

how many of you got filtered admit it

Awful camera and a story that didn't make any sense. Also, there was no intro or tutorial to introduce you to the not immediately obvious magic system. The world was also very bland and didn't stick out at all among its competitors.
Late game, the game was broken. You were immune to all enemy attacks if you had the last stone spell, and knowing a little bit of water let you heal what little damage you took.
It deserved better than it got, but it wasn't good.

is that the guy from the forest after the mining town?
first playthrough before I knew how the systems worked, yeah he did for a while

Needed a memory card to save

I got filtered by the Wind boss because I didn't know what I was doing tried to keep all my elements around the same level.

I never got to own a controller pack so I coudn't finish it. Been thinking about replaying it but I don't think it has aged very well.

Nah man, I always remember there was a dude in a forest later on who would filter every other run or so for me as a kid.

it was so great that games have been aping it from the acclaimed aiden chronicles, to makai kingdom a breath of fire title eternal sonata and so on
games a big dick swinging strange feverdream adventure through a crudely made storybook
iconic imagery and music, nutters spells and strategies, and an unfinished, contemplative world, surreal from box to shelf
9/10 game
11/10 experience
20/10 influential

Make way for the real filter.

Attached: Zelse.png (608x448, 255.49K)

I beat the first two bosses at least, and was doing really well until I got to a cave that was pitch black and filled with fire monsters that kicked the shit out of me, even after multiple hours of grinding levels.

Attached: 4596458.jpg (960x404, 57.54K)

Yeah. Solvaring is just "I hope you know how basic things like heal spells work"
This guy is a proper fucking filter. You won't pass him if you aren't prepared for him

It's a shame this game was a genetic dead end. I would have liked to see the weird combat get developed in other games but it never really happened. if i were an indie dev i'd like to make my on twist on Q64 and Hybrid Heaven

hybrid heaven ended up branching into other genres. After all we can see tekken took great inspiration with SUPERIOR LIMB BASED COMBAT

for some reason I recognize him even though I haven't touched the game in like 20 years, so he must have been bad. the only other one I can remember for no real reason is the fire guy in the cave after the desert.

Aidyn Chronicles was better

Attached: Aidyn_Chronicles-_The_First_Mage_game_cover.jpg (256x181, 20.55K)

Aidyn Chronicles was in development before Quest 64 even released, and actually took most inspiration from Final Fantasy 4 and Parasite Eve. Also Aidyn has soul and is a way better game even if the company was overambitious and couldn’t finish it in time

get that fucking shit out of my face right now you piece of shit

nothing beats chain suplexing blastybois and armbarring nastycrabs

It felt like it was prototype of a game that never existed, like it felt it was lacking on stuff and it was pretty unbalanced.

Of all the bosses I remember him, Solvaring (the first bandit boss guy) and then I remember the scenario of that little island you go to and have to traverse the cave, I remember it stumping me as a kid too.

Meh he was easy, one that took me a while was that bitch with a red dress on the way to kick Fargo.

Lots of inspiration and great ideas, the game really was headed in the right direction, but it just wasn't well executed. Understandable given the conditions it was released in (early N64 title). Its too broken to be higher than a 6/10 but a sequel that polished the mechanics could had been so much more.

wait really? i had no idea

I never had trouble with her. She was late enough in the game that by the time I got there I understood how things worked.

the real filter was the blue cave
