Totally untrue, they were a rarity but they weren't "basically not a thing". We know for a fact that steppe nomads absolutely had female combatants, the Norse did indeed have (rare) female combatants, and female generals were a thing although I could see why you wouldn't count those as actual combatants. But they did fight.
Remember that women fought with weapons, not their fists, and also remember that just because something's sub-optimal doesn't mean it doesn't happen. There are non-fighting traits at play, such as social position.
