What the FUCK were they thinking when they made this game?

They go insecure about the game they were making due to focus groups and were desperate to give it any kind of gimmick to stand out.
At least didn't completely devolve into minigame collection like 3 did.

>GTA and Ratchet are fun, let's make a worse version of those!

I had no idea Jak was made by naughty dog until now, since I generally dont pay attention to these kind of things.
My oh my, how the mighty have fallen.
I'm going to listen to despacito.

I played it as a kid and thought it was fantastic.
Sure, you might argue, kids are the worst game critics, But I say you are wrong, It is game journos who are the worst game critics and kids are the only ones who can truly understand the THRILL a game is trying to convey and thus are in fact the very best game critics.
Following this line of reasoning it stands as undisputed that Jack 2 is in fact a good game, whether you like it or not.

Edge sells. Didn't stop it from being a fun game though.

good shit

TPL was for babies. 2 and 3 are Teenkino

>Let's make Jak and Daxter based.

Its peak early 2000's edge kino.
I love how you can even skate everywhere. What a game.

I don't know, but it took some balls to steer the series in that direction and manage to keep your audience engaged.
Loved TPL, loved Jak 2, liked Jak 3.

It's funny, it's like they went through a checklist of things that were cool according to market research so you ended up with a bizarre merger of a fantasy and technology-oriented world with guns, flying cars, a GTA style mission based game structure and a fucking skateboard. Oh yeah and an edgy, "mature" tone and protagonist. In the hands of less competent developers it would've been a complete mess.

THEY THOUGHT YOU WERE MATURE ENOUGH TO APPRETIATE AN OPEN WORLD BUT THEY THOUGHT WRONG

>Gta got popular
>Kiddy platforms not popular and Nintendo GameCube and Mario sunshine sold like shit compared to n64
>crash also started selling like shit
>do the math
This era was weird made devs experiment to try to appeal to edgy teenagers

They were thinking of making a good game and they succeeded.
Precursor Legacy is fun for an hour then it gets repetitive.

Naughty Dog copied the latest popular trend, seems like it's all they've been doing since this game

Such an amazing game. One of the best of that gen. It has a bit of everything and yet it still feels cohesive and soulful.

vice city happened.

They’ve been doing it beforehand.
Jak 1 was just another mascot platformer collectathon like Mario 64 and Banjo Kazooie.

Too much respect for the average player. They didn't think about how Zig Forums players in 2020 wouldn't be able to beat it.

They were thinking it's time to make a badass game and then they did.

OP here. I'm actually playing it now, I hit this part of the game where every mission feels like total shit. Destroy the hellcat cruisers, Find the people in the fortress, escort the 3 assholes through the sewer, use the titan suit that controls like shit with a useless camera, race Erol through the city street.

I have had some fun with the game, and I like the story and characters, but it's weird how shitty it is at the same time.

I'M GUNNA DITCH KIERA

Whacked is such a good fucking (fucking) game fucker

Still filtering plebs after all these years
How can one game be so based?

Literally git gud.

Collectathons were a dying (and all around shitty) genre so they tried to move away into something else.

>TFW Go back and realize that Dark Jak is fucking near useless and takes half a century to build the meter

I didn't say anything about difficulty? I guess focus-tested trend-chasing trash is OK if you played it as a child.

>meanwhile Light Jak in 3 is actually useful

They wanted to take some of what was popular which was sandbox and GTA style games. That being said it was still a hell of a ride and I'm glad to have experienced the Jak trilogy growing up.

The biggest fix is just allowing you to use light/dark without having to fill up the bar

>Collectathons were a dying (and all around shitty) genre
take that back you fucking nigger
