Its just the uncanny valley effect. He's gotten closer and closer to higher detail over the years, so the static images look less abstract and therefor harder to imagine a personality on.

What so soulless about the 3rd compared to the first? There are times where the old has more soul, but this? This I don't get, the 3rd has longer legs which I think is a bit lanky, but besides that, it's not that different. What is soul to you?
