Going into 2020 the contenders were FF7R, TLOU2, and Cyberpunk. FF7R status took a minor hit from critics but the leaks for TLOU2 and rumors for Cyberpunk have basically sunk their chances at GOTY.
HOWEVER, surprisingly Animal Crossing has made a strong case for for GOTY combining a good game with good release timing
