The GF twist isn't nearly as important as you're making it out to be. They could have simply hand-waved it with "we were all too young at the time to remember specifics and we all look different now because that's how growing up works".

I think FFVIII gets a bad reputation. It is extremely easy to break the game and become essentially unbeatable, but it's a neat, innovative system.

Barret's "arc" with Dyne is purely inconsequential and Nanaki doesn't even have a backstory, Seto is explained as having died protecting the Canyon and after that Nanaki only speaks when it's a "everybody gets to say something" scene.

I'm going to voice my opinion, OP. I was a massive FF8fag ever since I was 9 years old until a few weeks ago (29 currently). I never touched anything related to FF7 out of loyalty to 8. I played FF7R recently because the gameplay seemed cool and loved it. Since there was a lot of story elements I couldn't understand, I decided to emulate the original FF7 and play through it. All I can say is: it's easy to see why FF7 is Squeenix's spoiled child. It has so much soul. From the story to the minigames to the music to the mechanics. FF8 is a good game, but FF7 has more soul. That is all.

Imagine being this retarded. Barret has vastly more characterization than Tifa who only exists to be Cloud's waifu and to pander to the audience. She's basically the only one who speaks beyond the 'everybody' scenes. Hell, even fucking Vincent has more characterization than Cloud or Tifa and he barely exists in the game at all. You understand Vincent's motivation, Cloud just does things...because he does things.

Squall fell for Rinoa because she was the only one persistent enough to pursue him regardless of his trying to shove her away. Its established during the SeeD graduation and the assassination attempt that Quistis is overly emotional and takes those little quips too personally. When Squall tells her to fuck off, she fucks off.

Squall's specific hang up is with a fear of abandonment. He wants to believe that personal relationships are doomed to fail and with one of the primary themes of the game being "self-fulfilling destiny", he constantly puts himself in situations that lead to his social relationships never taking off the ground.

Rinoa was the first person in his life who forced a positive relationship onto him, and continued pursuing him regardless of his attempts to push her away. This shows him that it is possible to have a prolonged social relationship, and when he realizes that despite all this he's going to lose her anyway to sorceress shenanigans, it forces him to come to terms with the fact that he did care about her and that he does want social interaction and meaningful relationships, even if he's not fully capable of verbalizing it to anyone but a comatose body.
