Because he's literally a military slave.

Do Armor upgrades count?

This. but more like a tool/machine or experiment

The ceremony got cut a little short by a literal alien invasion of earth.

probably a stroke of luck for the chief, ron perlman was probably planning on pissing on his own hand before shaking the chief's, he's a bit deranged

He still hasn’t completed his Distance Learning courses.

He already turned it down and is the highest enlisted rank already. Without attending officer school, John isn't eligible for any further advancement. To him being an officer would just be boring.

Because he holds the highest rank possible while still being able to deploy in the field.
Ranking admirals are mostly authority and executive figures who make the big picture decisions but rarely ever see front line combat.
The UNSC relies on chief as a solider not a pencil pusher

>ron perlman was probably planning on pissing on his own hand before shaking the chief's, he's a bit deranged

YO LIL JOHNNIE

Are you making this up?

No, he stays at his rank because it was decided before he was born. Dont you know the lore and how everything he ever did was decided because he is the chosen one?

wasn't noble six a lieutenant and still allowed to fight in on the field? Lieutenant is an officer rank, albeit the lowest one. Idk how it really works in halo but in real life, the officer levels are labeled O for officer and then 1 through 10. O1 through O3 are considered company grade officers because they often work in direct fighting or direct support. They're typically in harms way more often. This includes 2nd and first lieutenants and captains. O4 through O6 are considered field grade officers, who don't fight actively but instead plan out and orchestrate battles. This includes majors, lieutenant colonels, and colonels. O7 through O10 are flag officers or general officers because they have a flag that is posted with them wherever they go to indicate that they're a general.

They use Navy Ranks. 0-1 is Ensign, 0-2 LT Junior Grade, and 0-3 LT.

Captain would be 0-6

halo is a pretty kewl guy, he killz aleins and doesnt afraid of anything

oh. For whatever reason the navy (and coast guard) are the only branches that feel the need to use different rank names. A captain of a ship in the navy equates to being a colonel in the marine corps, but a captain in the marines is equivalent to a lieutenant in the navy. During a time of war, the armed forces can choose to elect a 5 star officer which supersedes even the most senior general. The marine corps doesn't have this rank but in the other services they're called general of the army, general of the air force, and fleet admiral.

he's barely even considered human and more like a military weapon

He is optimized for being frontline soldier, so there is no point in him being officer. Giving him such title would just be honorary.

There's no rank above Master Chief

Marines would fall under a Navys 5 Star. Back in the 1700s Marines were the ones who jumped from one Ship onto another to fight on the Decks and capture the Vessel, while the Sailors manned the cannons and defended their Ship.

no enlisted rank*

aren't the navy and marines separate technically?

I love halo but this always got me. It's fucking retarded

Look at their emblem. Department of the Navy.

Even today, Marines still deploy using Navy Ships to transport all their gear.

oh

The real reason he never gets promoted is because he will always be known as master chief to the community. If he got promoted he'd be called a different rank which doesn't sound as cool.

All he wanted was being able to blast aliens with his AI waifu

Any other name would have been gay because people would have had to add "The" to the title to make it artificially more cool. Imagine instead they forced his name as "The captain" or "the Sargeant".

Master Chief is so smooth you're kidding yourself if you said you found a better rank name

Because the Admiral doesn’t have a nice ring to it.

>So, in thinking about other ways we could name him, Rob said, “Well, we could give him a rank.” I was like, okay, Sergeant then. But Rob said, “Well, he’s a marine, right? So it has to be a naval rank.”
>So I said, “Okay, he’s a Commander. He’s like James Bond.” Rob is a stickler for military accuracy, and he’s the reason the shotgun shells have a little dent where the firing pin hits. He said commanders don’t get sent into fights. So we looked up ranks in the US navy, and above this certain line you’re no longer considered expendable. Looking there, Master Chief was the highest non-commission officer rank that’s considered expendable. We thought the name sounded stupid, but it just kind of stuck.
Lore reason, he chose not to be promoted.

I know but it still sounds ridiculous that the unsc wouldn't give him the highest rank possible or even go to the extent of making up a new rank just for John because of all the shit he's accomplished.
>destroyed an entire halo ring and covenant armada
>prevented galactic genocide twice
>found the index
>destroyed high charity after it crashed
>fought his way to truth so that arbiter could kill him

Cheif had literally every medal possible except for the purple heart before he was 20. Not receiving yet another probably didnt hurt his feelings.

He has been offered a promotion to an officer class several times even going as high up as admiral but he turned it down, likely due to the fact it will involve more pencil pushing and less fighting

Master Chief is the final enlisted rank in the navy.
