Very few people will be switching over this gen. Microsoft and Sony know that BC with current gen is what most people care about so if you already have a library on the Xbone or the PS4 then you're far more likely to stay in that particular line to keep your library and have enhancements for next gen.

The only chance it has is intregrating the damn thing to windows al together, outside murrica, Xbox is irrelevant and they having nothing but shooters, overpriced "indies" and forza.

it doesn't matter if Microsoft has a really good life this generation and good software support from all parties. microsoft still has a long way to go in terms of generating the same type of buzz and nostalgia that nintendo and sony have built around their games and consoles for years and years spanning a few generations. that alone has more consoomer power than doing well one time over several genrations.

Depends on the pricing and the launch lineup. There's no forced Kinect or draconian policies in place this time around, so Sony won't get an easy early win handed to them in a silver platter. If the PS5 is more expensive and the launch titles are as awful as the PS4 ones, the Xbox might make a comeback and stay competitive. If Microsoft actually releases some good shit during the first year, it could even take the advantage. Overall, it's possible, but we don't have nearly enough info to tell right now.
Nintendo might end up as the unquestionable winner if both the PS5 and Xbox are too expensive, we're going to enter into a global recession (thanks Corona-chan) and people won't have that much disposable income to spend on video games.

Nobody is going to buy an Xbone for new games after the next gen is released, at worst some people will be delaying their purchase.

Xbox is really more about maintaining control of game developers for Microsoft than it is about winning. if they can get devs to see their marketshare as Xbox One+Xbox X+Windows 10 by pushing them to drop legacy win32 game support they'll be able to maintain that easily even if they 'lose' another generation.
If they lose devs writing for their platforms first, they'll quickly lose completely just like what happened to Internet Explorer when web devs started using Gecko and KHTML/Webkit based browsers because devs will realize just how shitty Microsoft's platforms really are.
If that happens, its going to be really funny in 2030 when the GNU/Linux subsystem for Windows gets used for playing games, even old Win32 ones because Microsoft can't be bothered to maintain their compatibility layer properly.

Sony is releasing Horizon on PC because it's already running on the Decima Engine and they want to promote it for Horizon Zero Dawn 2
