Always wanted to play XC but never had a Wii of new3ds, so i'm excited for the DE.
Played XC2 but felt disappointed with the story and characters, though least the world felt interesting.
The things i enjoy the most about RPGs are the story, characters and world building, so, is it truly a must play? I want to read your experiences with it.

Xenoblade is fantastic. I'm legitimately confused when I see people say how good 2 is. I've put maybe 10 hours into it, and have restarted it maybe 3 or 4 times of the last 3 years. It just is not interesting or gripping enough to me.
My only advise going into Xenoblade 1 is to not do every single sidequest you can. It is very similar in regards to Dragon Age Inquisition in that respect. Every single zone is Hinterlands huge, with Hinterlands redundancy. If you do every quest you can, you will out level the story content, and probably grow bored as it poses no challenge.

Xenoblade in general (1, X & 2) is really good. Never understood why a fanbase so small compared to other bigger franchises still resorts to internal shit flinging between games.

1 does more early on to get you hooked and to keep you hooked. I loved the casts of both games but I do greatly prefer 1's for just how tighter they all seem with each other. The world building is not as robust as 2's and how interwoven Blades were in Alrest's world and gameplay, but it still is well thought out and nicely explored here, especially when you reach later parts of the game.

The story and characters are better than 2. It's anime instead of game fan argument that 2 is better. In fact if we go gameplaywise X would be the best of the 3 but like recent Fire Emblem games the jrpg game with bad story becomes a black sheep people can't enjoy so then 1 would be the best option since you say you're more of a story and character person.
