CJ is a likeable guy, but the whole game is about how the hood lyfe poisons you; leaving people in puddles of their own failures wanting more.
The literal second CJ left the hood, both times, it fell apart. People started dying, drug dealers popped up, old friends turned to enemies. CJ is literally the most sane person in this entire game and it's entirely because he tries to escape the hood whenever possible.
