Cloud and the gang escape the Shinra building and, upon reaching the end of the highway, leave Midgar with the mission of tracking down Sephiroth.

For everything they added, the end result was the same.

All the events of the original game will eventually take place. There might be additional scenarios, but they'll lead to the same conclusion.

This is getting into Caramel Chapter 3 levels of theory. We know Nomura wanted Versus to be a trilogy, that's it. It's probably why the final product was given to Tabata as late as it did too, AFTER it was changed to XV in E3 2013.
