Emulation simulates hardware for a rom to run on, this doesn't require that and runs natively on PC hardware. This means it runs more efficiently, and there are many layers of programmatic abstraction and bullshit removed. Unlike with a compiled rom you can directly edit the code to change/mod the game. It also means you can rewrite the game to run on other systems very easily and quickly compared to coding new emulators for said systems.
