Comfy JRPG thread

Let's talk about JRPGs Zig Forums
What are you guys playing?
What are your favorites in the genre?
What game(s) would you recommend to others?

I think everyone who enjoys the genre owes it to themselves to play Legend of Mana. It is fun, it was great music, it has a lot of colorful characters and its hand drawn backgrounds look beautiful to this day.

I should honestly branch out more. I've played most FF's, a few DQ's, and dabbled in Persona 3. I want to give xenogears, xenoblade, and vagrant story a chance soon. Looking forward to the XBC remaster.

I started ayesha yesterday, am I meant to follow the 'hints' or whatever? I ran into a cave and got stomped then it asked me to go to the opposite side of the map

Never played the series before. Got it on a Steam sale last year and finally installed it. Doing a blind run on Nightmare. I'm near the end of Chapter 1 (I think?) I just broke into the sky pirate's secret base.

Legend of Mana fucking sucks. Just has good music and good graphics, nothing more.

Vagrant Story was a bit hard to get into for me at first but the payoff is great, I strongly recommend it.

Trying to kill the final boss of Vesperia’s second act, but I’m 5 levels underleveled, and have no TP recovery items.

What's wrong with it?

Just finished FFTA2 now i understand why no one ever talk about this one

Ridiculously obtuse crafting system that has half of the game's payoffs
Sort of storyless, there's not much of a central plot you're kind of dicking around and wandering around
Uninteresting cardboard cutout characters

as an experiment it's nice to sort of have but as a game or JRPG it's just, not really there?

whats a comfy JRPG which focuses on characters
and exploration more than saving the world from evil.

just let these threads die, they're a glorified general at this point. they were comfy when 'lockdown' user was still making them and before LoT2fag showed up, but adding comfy to the title doesn't make it so

Playing P5R, finished Kaneshiro's dungeon and still have no idea why some people call these corridors good.

>Sort of storyless, there's not much of a central plot you're kind of dicking around and wandering around
>Uninteresting cardboard cutout characters
It kind of sounds like you got to the "end" and beat the game but actually missed about half the content.

>STOP talking about videogames!
How about you piss off, buddy?

you clearly weren't around for the early threads you faggot

How exactly does that change the fact that you are throwing a bitch fit about a thread in which people are discussing videogames, you fucking retard?

I just finished Ao yesterday. Actually gotta figure out what to play next. I might go with an old game I already played like Xenogears since it's been a while.

What possesses people like you to come into a certain thread and attempt to "cancel" it? Literally just go do something else.

that's fair and I'll probably do that. It's just depressing to see what these have become, no actual discussion happens, it's just reccomendations and people blogging about what they're playing and any actual discussion gets shot down by people who don't understand subjectivity

>reccomendations and people blogging about what they're playing
How is this a bad thing?

Currently playing the first episode of Light Fairytale. Its pretty fun, though I hope the 2nd episode features more party members. Still impressive that it was basically created by one dude.

Is there any way to play Final Fantasy IX with battles running at a smooth(er) frame rate?
I'm usually not -too- autistic about these things but 15 fps does sound a bit jarring.

Playing Xenogears. Never played it before. Honestly, it's not that good. I'm just sticking to it because I've already come so far (I just saw Stone take away the green-haired nanomachine girl in the dig site) and because I would like to see the plot twists I've heard about at the end. Next on the list are Trials of Mana and Xenoblade DE. I have played Xenoblade once before years ago and liked it a good deal.

We had a thread yesterday that had some healthy discussion. If the threads derail too much then they'll just be removed by mods or die off. Honestly who gives a shit.

shrug
I played the game normally without rushing to the end and if the game decided that meant only experiencing half the content, I'm within my rights to say its being deliberately obtuse

it belongs in a general

currently playing W101 while watching g4 and techtv episodes with Zig Forums but i have to restart on my FF7 save because the launcher stopped working so i had to reinstall everything and that wiped my save. luckily i was only 8 hours in so its not too bad. Going to be starting tales of vesperia or symphonia later today not sure which i go with. Which game has the better combat?

why are you even here? just go to another thread already

Why not try and make actual discussion yourself? And recommendations and blogposts can definitely incite actual discussion, as well as being helpful for people that just want to find new games to play. Unfortunately, we'll just have to deal with the autists that come and go, like that guy that comes in, like clockwork, and asks what the appeal of JRPGs are, making incorrect assumptions about them because he's clearly never played more than two.

This. The game has 3 big stories and a bunch of side quests that all share a very apparent main theme that is spelled out to you in the beginning of the game. It's just not focused on your own character. I always found that the side quest style made the world and characters feel more alive.

Made some progress in Code Vein last night.

The area that I can assume used to be a dried up lake, is a pain to navigate

How much of the game takes place in Anor Londo? Are there a variety of environments? I'm wondering if the game is worth it

I'm playing pic related and I'm having a pretty wonderful time

Sounds like you just don't like that your idea of interesting discussion and opinions didn't end up being very interesting to other people. Either stop whining or keep trying to start a discussion with some actual value. Just because you have a statement does not make it worth anything.

>Why not try and make actual discussion yourself?
Clearly bitching and doing backseat moderation is more important than addressing the """issue""" he is complaining about.

This is my first time hearing about this game but it looks like something I might enjoy, I'll look into it.

>Going to be starting tales of vesperia or symphonia later today not sure which i go with. Which game has the better combat?
I'd say Vesperia. I'd also argue it's just better overall.

Just finished SMT Strange Journey Redux last night. First time playing Strange Journey, was an enjoyable time. I'd like to get around to Devil Survivor Overclocked next for my next SMT fix, but that'll be for later. Right now I'm trying to decide what to tackle next, between Trials of Mana and Rune Factory 4 Special.

I really wish I could like this. I love the character design, but everything else is just sub-mediocre. It honestly needs yet another remake.

cool ill go with vesperia then. how long do tales games take? I have heard some take 40 hours while others clock in around 60 just for the main story without doing sidequests

>What are you guys playing?
Finished Final Fantasy 13 over the weekend and started Final Fantasy 7 Remake. Thinking of playing Earthbound or Final Fantasy 8 afterwards.

>What are your favorites in the genre?
My all-time favorite game (from any genre) is The World Ends With You, but specifically looking at JRPGs I also really like NieR Automata, Tales of Symphonia, Final Fantasy 6, Final Fantasy 7, and Persona 4.

>What game(s) would you recommend to others?
See above.

I've never heard of this one before. What's it like? Turn-based? Or some other type of gameplay?

I have the collector's edition for the PS1. I love this game, despite its flaws.

grandia

I highly recommend Wild Arms 5. I also recommend getting the Japanse version, and then patching it with the English translation.

>How much of the game takes place in Anor Londo?

I haven't gotten to any Annor Londo like place.

All I have experienced is:
Underground ruined buildings
Ruined modern day city
A dried up lake
Deep, Dark, underground caves (completely optional)

Just finished chapter 11 in FF13. Or rather, I beat the boss but didn't leave yet. Might do some more missions before I move on.

You probably won't spend more than 2-3 hours there unless you get lost for real, and there's another map in the middle that splits it up. Remember to look down if you're lost.

no, stop trying to armchair psychoanalyze when you're this bad at it. the problem is that 'discussion' is just shitflinging

>Playing
Just beat Trials of Mana, gonna do another playthrough in a week or two
I'm technically playing FF7R but man I get bored of that in like an hour, so its slow going
I intend to restart Front Mission 5 at some point
>favorites in the genre and recommendations
Trials of Mana by far
Ar Tonelico 2
Grandia I and II
Persona 3 I would recommend but its not a 'favorite'
In general JRPGs are at their best when the world is at its most fantastic

It's kind of like a proof-of-concept for Bravely Default: characters gain 1 ability point per turn and can have up to 5 AP total. Various actions cost various amounts of AP. For example, a basic attack may cost 1 AP but a Cure spell may cost 2, and so on. If you do nothing on your turn you basically just defend.

It's a pretty cute, simple game, but there are some annoying aspects to it particularly (in my opinion) the limit on how many items you can hold.

Again, if you had anything of value to say you would have made valuable discussion. You are either very clearly salty that your interesting opinions aren't getting the treatment you think they deserve, or you're even worse, a passive whiner that just wants everyone else to dance to his own tastes. Point either way is, stop whining, start actually trying to get what you want, fartknocker.

It is turn based, but there are some uh... differences, I guess.
For starters, there's no mana, you use AP for all actions, your max AP is 5 and you get 1 each turn, you can use the boost command to defend instead of attacking and get 1 extra AP.
Also, skills and attacks tell you which row of enemies will be attacked first and enemy rows are wiped from left to right, you don't get to choose what to attack.
Each character gets their own inventory with limited slots and equipped gear uses slots too, so you gotta manage that inventory (altough once you get healing spells potions are rendered almost useless)
Also, there's a class system based on hats that you unlock thru story completion, and there's also the upgrade system that uses gems that enemies drop after most battles.

Just got Nocturne in. Is it better played on Normal or Hard?

you are the only one shitflinging ITT. the jrpg threads since lockdown have been the only good threads where people talk about video games. just go to another thread
