Nigger, I've played Smash since 64. Melee was fine for what it was, it didn't need its corpse dragged this deep down the timeline and it CERTAINLY wasn't the be-all end-all for Smash. It needs to die and it needs to have done so 10 years ago.

Also to be fair and accurate, Mang0 didn't plank people for any part of his career as Puff. Hbox has gotten a lot better about outright stalling. On that note, that is my single biggest beef with the entire Smash series community as a whole. I've been playing in tournaments since 05 and watching every game go through its shit. Once upon a time, rulesets banned a bunch of stuff to outright ban stalling with the clauses in the ruleset worded in a way that was slightly subjective, such as using rising pound offstage to scam the timer. Jump forward to Brawl when stalling became really prevalent and no TO ever had the balls to outright tell players that if they were caught trying to stall and it was obvious, they would be penalized. Instead we got ledgegrab limits and people still stalled, sets still took forever. Go forward to smash 4 and it took EVO TOs to have the brass to tell Bayos to piss or get off the pot. Now with Ultimate it's going through the same pain and people are whining about online characters because surprise surprise, making timeouts the best way to win encourages not playing the game.

Without Melee surviving we'd have more Smash based around fucking Brawl. RNG tripping, slow as fuck, nothing to get good with for the time investment unlocks can take.
I respect the Melee guys for showing that there's an audience for some kind of competitive platform game that actually has a learning curve despite Nintendo's lack of support and attempts to kill it
