While I still greatly enjoy this game, it really dropped the ball after Stardust Speedway, everything after it besides maybe Metallic Madness lacked the depth or polish that made the first half stand out. It feels and controls great, but you could tell that it was a rushed product.

How can it be called nostalgia pandering when it's simply a Sonic game that stays true to what Sonic truly is? Sonic Mania is not a soulful game because of the visual design or the references, it's a soulful game because it, more than any other Sonic game released since Sonic and Knuckles, it understands the core essence of what a Sonic game truly is through it's gameplay. It understands what made Sonic great in the first place, not by mimicking the surface elements or the iconography, but by mimicking it's masterful game design. It's what Sega and Sonic Team have shamefully forgotten and abandoned to run the franchise into the ground.
