Elder Scrolls is good in general (maybe less so as the numbers get higher), but they all need mods to be considered acceptable.

Oscuro's Oblivion Overhaul is what you need if you don't mind the extra content, or you can find a less cluttered mod like Scaling Unclustered or Better Leveling Lists

Realistic Leveling and Oblivion XP are fine enough leveling mods with a good degree of customization. The former raises attributes as skills raise, the latter is more like Fallout 3/NV leveling with full control over your skill/attribute allocation on a level up screen - but it's significantly more script intensive.

Oblivion is literally souless, I felt like it was trying to suck out mine. don't even get me started with those disgustingly horrible faces.

This. I played it on release, expecting a successor to Morrowind. What I got felt like a bootleg.

Oblivion is peak Soulless Charm. I'm fond of it as a cultural item, something to observe and revisit like a movie, but it will never be a good game.

to be fair the lore is fairly deep, the interactable part of the lore is pretty shallow though

The vanilla leveling and scaling system is a pain but definitely playable. If you wanna play with the vanilla leveling system, there's easy ways to level every skill to get max attributes each level easily. Example of a decent level:

If you want end, dont' put heavy armor, block or armorer in major skills, and every level try to get hit by 2-3 crabs/rats with full heavy armor + heavy shield, until you have leveled them 10 times (not each) The crabs and rats you can always find outside and inside the imperial city sewer, no matter your level.

If you want strength, you can get the horse from the priory in the main quest and just hit him with your fists, with your sword or an axe. You can get max STR and END each level that way. You can put one of hand to hand,blade or blunt in major skill as long as you remember to level end skills before the level up symbol appears.

I then recommend putting 1 point in luck as the third option every level, so you don't need to worry about maxing out 3 different stats, and it will still help somewhat.

As for the enemies, after you reach a high level you can also get more powerful items and spells from quests, so you will want to level up BEFORE doing a lot of the quest content. But it still is better to control when you level up, so be sure to have 1 decent combat skill at high levels, so in the example I gave you could even just use hand to hand that you were leveling even though it will probably do shit damage.

As for magic, most of the schools you can level up near a bed and it's really easy. I recommend putting resto in major skills because otherwise it will level really slowly, and it will still level slowly even with regular use.

OR you could just install a mod, but I like talking about the leveling system.

Morrowind is infinite times better. If Morrowind had some sort of map/coordinates for absolute retards like me who can't even navigate the real world without Google maps on at all time it would be my favorite rpg. Combat is a bit trash too but it doesn't have to be much better to be good enough
