They're strategy rpgs where the main gimmick is that they take the tropes of rpgs to the absolute extreme. Most characters and stories across the series are parodies of videogame and anime character and story archetypes, and the numbers and stats can be pushed to ridiculous heights. Everything is over the top and not very often taken seriously, but there are still real story beats that happen and character arcs to get invested in. Most of the grindy shit is totally optional and the main bulk of the games are usually pretty easy to faceroll without having to worry or think to hard, but it's still fun. And then the grinding stuff to the side is mostly there for autists like me to lose themselves for hours in.

Playing thru D1 right now. Why does Etna suck so much? Spears are ridiculously weak and have weird specials. Etna also has really weak character specials.

Is it worth playing the Complete Edition or can just go with Steam version?

Only played Disgaea 1 and 2 on PS2 and kinda forgot about franchise, how are later entries better or worse?

Better in terms of gameplay, questionable in terms of story.

3 is divisive love it or hate it but not as good as 1 even if you do like it
4 is arguably the peak of the series and lots of people myself included it put it on par if not above 1
5 has the best gameplay and a lot of really nice quality of life changes but also has by far the worst story and characters and is almost devoid of the soul that the rest of the series has

Disgaea 3 has some hits and misses but it very skippable compared to 4 and 5. 4 has a better cast and story, 5 has the better gameplay but some of the dullest characters and plots in the series. Disgaea "D2" should be avoided at all costs due frequent hard crashes and rumors of the game bricking ps3s.

DD2 feels like they were experimenting with new systems and just slapped the D1 skin on it to do something slightly-safe. It feels a lot like a prototype of 5 yeah. There's some cool quirky gameplay things and some decent jokes here and there but I don't think it's a great game overall. I'd put it below 5.
