Yes. Old rpg stories were mostly based on things similar to DnD they were running and making a believable world was not something that was prioritized over how fun and quirky the story was. People's tastes in RPG stories just matured over time.

If you think Zig Forums lingo is repetitive, I challenge you to scroll through the top YouTube comments. Every comment is written like a playscript with this "Me: ..." shit rather than just typing normally, and every comment includes at least one quote from the recent Marvel movies.

It was just the standard CRPG thing to do at the time. A lot of the people who worked on them grew up on golden era sci-fi and other pulp fiction (see Ultima: Martian Dreams for an undiluted overdose of that kind of thing). This led to a large pulp background to a lot of older CRPGs, especially Wizardry and Might & Magic.
After the old guard died and all of the old CRPG companies collapsed, the 'standard RPG formula' shifted to D&D as popularized by Baldur's Gate and others.
