I only play games in which I can make my own character and then I project at least an aspect of myself into the character, but I mostly try to make a character that fits well within the setting and story of the game

Never. It feels like devs badly want this to happen with stuff like silent protagonists or limited dialogue options, but vidya is one of the worst options for self-insertion or roleplay to me. I am not a mute who only nods or grunts in real life, and many times theres no dialogue option for what I'd really want to say.

However games are unparalleled at making me immersed in the environment and atmosphere of a place.
