Just there to support gameplay and add intrigue. You wanna know a game that had cool writing? The room 3. That game is all about deciphering visually appealing puzzles, intricate boxes filled with gears and switches that make me want to be an engineer. The story in that game adds an unsettling background that makes you wonder what the next rooms will contain, and it certainly keeps you playing trying to find out, but its not the central focus.

Zachtronics games have similar writing. Some of them, like Spacechem, have pages of text to explain the story, but it only gives you a glimpse at a time. Later entries like TIS-100 or MOLEK-SYNTEZ have even less text and lets you piece together the world and what you're doing in the game. Minimalism is the best fit for game stories.
