The online FGC is shite, especially if you go to hellholes such as kappa.
In comparison, every single local I've ever been to has been extremely chill. Everyone's just hanging out, having some drinks, and clapping cheeks in video games.
The FGC is fine, but don't get caught up in the drama. A community should never prevent you from getting into a game you find interesting, either way. I didn't start going to my locals until I had been playing fighting games for about four years - I was exclusively an online warrior. You don't need to worry about the FGC as a whole if you're not "participating" in it, and the in-person FGC is very chill. You might even make some new friends.

Depends on the game. Something like a fighting game literally depends on it's community. If there isn't a community, getting a game is pointless because you'll usually master assfucking the AI in a matter of hours, not days.
The whole LTG tranny thing opened up a floodgate that has almost instantaneously warped the ground most communities were built upon, that is to say comfort and casual competitiveness. Now everyone's afraid to talk for fear of getting put on blast on twitter. They'd been tweeting that not-even-/e/ tier shit with suggestive memes since samsho's pre-release, and no one ever complained until after. It's not a coincidence, it's people feeling emboldened.
You can say that's a good thing because people should be able to speak up, but what's not good is these people are being catered to. There were hundreds, and thousands of likes on the shitty lewd tweets, and way under any individual tweet when they made their apology.
That's ignoring that literally nothing on twitter will ever impact your game.
Whatever, this shit is just frustrating.
If you want to get into a fighting game, your best bet is to wait for a new one to show up, ideally in an established franchise, and jump aboard, because there will guaranteed be a community. May not be huge, but it'll be there. If you want to start one now, fighterz is a safe choice, tekken 7, sfv. Anything outside of those you start seeing diminishing returns.
The NRS games are also alright but they're usually dead as shit between updates.

I also want to add that we're on the cusp of a new generation where new fighting games will surely release for that respective generation. As no devs seem to give a shit about cross platform except for Capcom, it's worth holding off until maybe the end of the year before you considering getting into fighting games, as the communities will surely shrink somewhat when the next generation launches, except for SFV, which has a unified playerbase.
If you do want to get into fighting games now, I recommend SFV or Samurai Shodown. SamSho is very easy to get into, as it's more about mind games than mechanical depth. You can learn how to play SamSho adequately in two days. SFV is also somewhat easy to get into. Fighting games are like RTS games, though. They're difficult at first until you learn the rhythm, especially if you decide to use a fightstick with no experience.
If you like 3D fighters, you can play Tekken or Soulcalibur 6. I'm more of a SC6 guy, but that's because I don't find the characters of Tekken personally appealing.

I really don't know why people hate the Fgc, maybe it is because of the endless conversation and pretentious some people have as to why some game is not a real fighting game, or the constant porn posting, but to me the most important thing about the FGC and why it's so great is because of the tournament experience, locals and hype.
Even in times like this there are still so many good tournaments you can watch and memorable moments you can look back to like "What an answer!" Or hungrybox doing a bracket reset to winning Evo.
Or in more recent years too the level of professionalism hasn't let down either. It's great, and I haven't met any community in the world that is as excited as the FGC over two characters fighting on a screen until the screen ways game over, and most surprising, I have never shared that sentiment until I started playing and watching.
