ori and the blind forest

Someone mentions it at least once a week, where have you been?
Silksong was supposed to be out this year but who knows with Corona messing up everything.

I'm actually confused about this game. I personally loved it, but I see that a lot of people hate it, but when asked why they hey it, they just toss out a lot of buzzwords. I'm in the design process of my own metroidvania styled game, and while it places a fair amount differently from Hollow Knight, I'd like to learn from core issues similar games might have so I can avoid them.

try dark souls they basically just copied hollow knight but made it 3D

salt and sanctuary ...maybe ?

Popular games attract contrarians, and contrarians are a dime a dozen on this board.

I can never really get a straight answer on why Zig Forums hates it either.

Like said you will probably like Ori and the Blind Forest if you like Hollow Knight.

Yeah, I figured it was mostly contrarians, but I also figured that if there was some legit feedback I could take from it to improve my thing, I should go for it. Oh well, not a big deal either way.

Super Metroid? Castlevania: Symphony of the Night/Aria of Sorrow? Emulate those.

Ori and the Will of the Wisps. If you think Hollow Knight is a gem you will love Ori and the Will of the Wisps.

Like 90% of the hate is one really autistic guy who keeps spamming threads.

Ori and the blind forest just got a massive popularity spike in here

as an ori fan i approve of that

One time i saw a reddit post saying they liked the game, i now hate it.

It got too popular, which triggers Zig Forumsirgin's contrarian reflex, meaning that Hollow Knight is now shit and reddit.

Did you 112% it?

I've never played Ori, but I can recognize something as good when I see it.
I'll get around to it someday.

Play Super Metroid.

Welcome to Zig Forums

This is a very forgiving list. I see many things I'd put down a tier or two, but not many things I'd move up.

Not op but i tried to play it on switch with virtual console and it really hasn‘t aged that well, especially compared to sotn. Jumping feels like in slowmotion, really hoping for a remaster because i loved zero mission and am2r

Super Metroid
>I'm in the design process of my own metroidvania styled game
Wooooooooooooooow

Super Metroid
Metroid: Zero Mission
Castlevania: Symphony of the Night
Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow
Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin
Momodora: Reverie Under the Moonlight

The trinity and god-tier are pretty interchangeable, otherwise, good list.

Like I said a minute ago, I figured it was just Zig Forums being Zig Forums, but I also figured it was worth asking in case I could get some legit feedback.

>The complete mess that is la-mulana anywhere near the top
Don't get me wrong, it's enjoyable, but it's very shittily designed

It's 100% people who got filtered by Cornifer. Do not cater to these people.

hollow knight is the only metrovoidvania game that I ever felt truly immersed in. its huge with so many hidden areas and the design is great

I played it after Prime 2 came out, and the jumping felt pretty natural. SoTN feels worse in terms of movement to me, it's just too slow without shield dashing or the bat.
Both things can be fixed by exploit or not, but the platforming was definitely better in SM and I liked the level design more.

I think it's good but very overrated. Hollow Knight moves too slow for my tastes so backtracking feels like a chore and not as fun as something like Super Metroid. The art and atmosphere is great and the gameplay is good, but can get boring with how simple it is. The game just feels kinda bland at times and I had to push myself to try and finish it as I kept getting bored.

Not really a comparable type of game but I found Rain World much more fun and enjoyable. Haven't played Ori yet.

I don't get it. Super Metroid did the same thing where you just wonder a level for a bit before finding the map, if anything Hollow Knight is more forgiving for it with the paper trails that telegraph where he is.

Axiom Verge, more on the Metroid 1 side

Would Rain World count as a metroidvania? If so, it belongs in god-tier.

why is La Mulana on there twice?

Art style is shit. If you make a game, hire an artists that isn't chasing modern indie shit trends. I can not understand the praise this shit gets for it's art style just because it's "hand drawn", it's uninspired and the character designs are god awful minimalist garbage.
Just look at this fucking shit.

>Kirby and the Amazing Mirror
>>>Good
LOL, almost good list.

>I have bad taste ergo thing is bad

I loved the game, but my main complaints are:
>slow and shitty movement options at the start of the game
>backtracking
>having to kill a million bugs to get a proper journal entry
>amazing art but horrible level design, everything is a fucking square
>no quest tracker: it makes it difficult to get back into the game after leaving it for a while
>shitty fast traveling system
>not enough platforming sections
>not enough movement options by the end of the game
>not enough changes to the environment and enemies as the game progresses (only place that changed was forgotten crossroads and it was really cool)

Ah, I see, you enjoy HK's art style BECAUSE of it's minimalist garbage approach. Explains why you're an anime nigger.
