ranked is fine in solo online games like fighting games or RTS. the problem is doing ranked in team games because you have faggots freak the fuck out if they're going to lose their precious internet points.

The only online games i play are fighting games, otherwise i stick to sinle player, but from my experience playing ranked is much better than playing casuals, since you're more likely to meet smurfs on casuals than ranking
