Samus Aran Film

Second thread. I'm the screenwriter from before. I've read your answers and it has been enlightening, just not the way I had hoped for. For one, some of you literally do not understand what films are; I will get back to that in a moment. For two, some of you have an incredible scorn for other people ("normies", what do you think you are, exactly?). Let me elaborate.

What many of you asked for was this: a 2 to 3-hour long film in which at least 1 hour or more (!) was completely silent, with just Samus blasting aliens in caves. The fundamental problem here is this: my employers and myself are not preparing an experimental film, which this would be. Could it even be done well? No, because too much of a great thing makes it bad. What's your favourite dish? Imagine eating it at every meal for a month. Well, now your favourite dish is a torture. Great action works best when it's balanced, and 2 hours of action/foreboding moments wouldn't work. It's not a film, it's a long cutscene.

You need to understand that making a film based on a video game is first and foremost about making a film, not adapting a video game. What many of you ask for is basically taking the elements that make the games great and translating that to film, except those elements are great video game elements, not great film elements. In other words: you like blasting aliens in caves for hours, so you want a film with exactly that. I can't fathom how you get to that, at all, but it seems to be your wish for a Samus film. This could work for a short film, but that is not what my employers want. They want a full scale, big budget film.

Another thing that makes me doubt your critical senses: when describing what you want Samus to be as a character, you are quite literally telling me you want Rey Skywalker with less dialogue. You want her to be flawless, unemotional, some of you even said you wanted her to be autistic; you want her to have no weakness, no trauma, no issues of any kind. Basically, you want a smooth character. Doing that would make her completely uninteresting, which would then let the action get all the focus - that is fine for a game, because the action is what matters, your action, but a film is not a game. If I wrote her this way, people would call her a space Mary Sue before I finished one page of the script. I hope you realise that. Can any of you explain why you so hate Rey Skywalker for being pretty much a goddess without a flaw and yet you ask the same for Samus? (To be sure, the latest Star Wars trilogy's major problem was the writing, as it flies in the face of common sense, decency, and basic writing.)

As to Ridley, which I half-seriously suggested a different transliteration as Ri'dlih or something vaguely Lovecraftian so it would look alien (which it is), I got one worth answer about "chocolate" and its original spelling and how some terms get adapted into the local language (while others do not, like pizza). I suppose it is fanstalgia that makes you cling to everything that exists in the game, but I can't afford to do that for the sake of the project. If any of you can provide an explanation as to why an alien general would have an English name, or why his original alien name eventually becomes "Ridley", then I am all ears. I won't have anything in my script that doesn't make functional sense. (Yes, I am aware the name came from Ridley Scott and was a tribute to how much Metroid drew inspiration from the Alien film.)

Fuck off with your larp and explode normalfag

My employers and myself have agreed to go for a gritty realistic type of science-fiction film, very much like Scott's Alien from 1979, and absolutely not for a Marvel type of science-fiction film, with unrealistic motion and effects and a certain distance from reality. We are not making a film targeted at children. This is also why we need Samus to be a character with a personality, a past, things to overcome on a personal level, etc, and not some bimbo autist with a weapon doing xeno spelunking.

That being said, there are a few points I managed to secure with my employers: Samus will look as you expect: tall, blonde, fit, strong, actually sexy and beautiful, blue eyes and all. Characters like her aren't too frequent nowadays and it's her iconic look too, so it works on both counts. The idea, though it was not needed, is that a woman doesn't have to be ugly to have a personality. I'll use this to briefly mention feminism as some of you touched upon that previously.

My idea of good feminism is pretty much my idea of good anti-racism: the less you mention it, the better it works. Being a woman is only one aspect of Samus as a person; it isn't all-defining and it isn't important in itself. It's just a parameter. I'm not going for feminism, I'm going for Samus. My bet is that what people like about her coincide with what feminists would want if they knew how to handle their cause. But that is merely a coincidence. Don't expect grimace-inducing moments where Samus highlights her sex as if anyone was in doubt over it. That won't happen. Being a soldier will define her a whole lot more.

As to her past trauma, many of you seem to have very little understanding of developmental psychology and how humans grow, or what trauma even is. I understand you want a typical super hero sort of Samus, with no weaknesses or flaw, but my employers and myself have no desire to turn Samus into a run of the mill comic book heroine. We also see no reason to relinquish what makes her an interesting character. You can have psychological issues without being a "hysterical mess". Think Bruce Wayne rather than Borderline Personality Disorder. If we wanted a smooth character like you request, we could just make a whole new one; no need to waste potential. But that is not our aim.

Lastly, my employers and myself have a nuclear option. To make sure we retain freedom of creativity, my employers' employers have agreed that it would be possible to create a completely new entity merely inspired by Metroid. We would change all the names, the looks, the esthetics, and create something based on Metroid but it wouldn't be called Metroid and we would move as far away from it without losing what we think is the spirit of it. What Metroid is to the Alien film, that is what our film would be to Metroid.

Fuck off nonce, go back to raping kids on Epstein’s island with all your Hollywood friends

For now, the basic story we have been given to work with involves this: Samus goes on a mission, which appears fairly straightforward at first; the film then unfolds in two story-lines, one is the mission, the other is selected moments in her past (I didn't want to have a single childhood moment somewhere in the film, I wanted to make a lot more of her past life); then the mission ramifies into a whole new thing and that's basically act II, the bulk of the film, which I won't divulge here.

If you wish to help, and you can, because despite your grumpy temperaments, I still want to give the fans a chance to participate and influence the project, then keep in mind these basic elements when you post: the movie cannot be 2 hours of a silent protagonist killing aliens for shits and giggles, Samus cannot be a space Mary Sue without a flaw or a reason to do what she does, and, lastly, Ridley needs a new name.

The End

PS: post great Samus artwork.

I forgot to add that we take the "knight VS dragon" thing quite seriously. It so happens that I'm a scholar in medievial literature, so I will inject a lot of that in there, which should feel fresh to the fans. The idea is to make something that would please both hardcore fans and people who know nothing about Metroid.

All I can tell you is that this is going to be wonderful. Yes, we are in touch with Hollywood, but the arrangement is something different. Hollywood will only get involved when everything is ready in pre-production, basically: screenplay, artwork, etc. Until then, my employers, and their own employers, are in control. They also intend to work with a director who can do pretty much what he/she wants. Once our part of the project is complete, there will be no changes made to the artwork and screenplay, unless we agree to it. It is an extremely secure deal. You'll understand why I don't name names. Yes, I am only trolling, but should this ever come to light, merely not naming names will be very useful from a legal standpoint.

Don't let shyness and embarrassment at getting trolled keep you from posting your ideas, as they might end up in the film.

>Fuck off nonce, go back to raping kids on Epstein’s island with all your Hollywood friends
>nonce
Go back to school.

Nonce means pedo

I wish you the best of luck with whatever this is... But there honestly should be very few full flashbacks. Sorry, Samus is better mysterious. The only flashback you should be allowed is to show that Ridley killed her parents. That's it. Honestly, have it be a couple glimpses and that's enough.

"You know this space pirate?"
* Flash of him attacking their space colony or whatever *
"He killed my parents." That's all you need

this is the dumbest fucking larp I've ever seen. I glanced over your first post and actually laughed at your claim. Screenwriter huh? You deluded autist. You wouldn't make Writing 112.

Let's make a movie out of a dead IP with a notoriously silent protagonist whose only speaking entry was a fucking catastrophe.
GO FUCK YOURSELF

>Sorry, Samus is better mysterious.
If your main character is mysterious, that only works for a certain amount of time in a feature film. If she was a secondary character, sure, but if she is to be the main character, she can't just be a walking mystery.

>The only flashback you should be allowed is to show that Ridley killed her parents.
Everyone would think of Batman and how this exact flashback has been done to death for decades. If anything, we're considering precisely not doing this one and letting people imagine the traumatic even on their own. We're thinking of a side-story rather than flashbacks. It would focus on Samus' happy early childhood in a high tech mining colony, in high contrast with the cavernous mission in the film. Seems far more interesting to me than going for the obvious that all fans already know and that newcomers have no reason to care for just yet.

Kill yourself you fucking nonce.

>"You know this space pirate?"
>* Flash of him attacking their space colony or whatever *
>"He killed my parents." That's all you need

Are you guys trolling me? I didn't mention it but "space pirates" is not going to make it. We're changing that, 100% certain. "Pirates" implies a smaller organisation, an illegal one, etc, and the "space pirates" are not actually pirates by any military definition. If you want to save this phrase, you will have to use actual arguments, which I will read. If you can convince me, I will keep the term, but otherwise don't waste your time in insults.

> If your main character is mysterious, that only works for a certain amount of time in a feature film.
This is false. We don't need the back story, we just need to know how the character will act in a given situation

Go watch Dredd, with Karl Urban. Samus should have about as much backstory as he does in that

>"He killed my parents." That's all you need
While the trauma is an essential part of the story, we don't want to make it a revenge movie, so John Adams Alexander Ridley III will not be hunted by Samus for personal reasons; we imagine Samus to be above that. It'll play a part, but not in this dumb, superficial way.

Fine, he killed her parents among untold thousands more and must be stopped

>you can estimate a screenwriter's screenwriting abilities based on their 4channel posts
2/10, some will take that bait.

> Samus' happy early childhood in a high tech mining colony
That is a really, really stupid idea

>Let's make a movie out of a dead IP
We're making the film in such a way that it will suffice itself. We could also make it without connections to that franchise. It is a real option.

your employers should find a better writer

>everyone working in cinema is a pedophile
OK.

Are you fucking stupid?

What in the nigger faggot's name is this thread even

>Go watch Dredd, with Karl Urban. Samus should have about as much backstory as he does in that
This works in Dredd because the story is completely situational. It's one place, locked down, and that remains the set for the entire film. We don't plan to have this type of setting for our project. My employers have especially stated their interest in a character study of sorts, so the mysterious approach is not an option for me.

That said, why aren't you interested in Samus as a character?

Name a single action movie that has more than 10% of it being flashbacks that's pacing and/or character development isn't garbage

>That is a really, really stupid idea
Why? If you highlight the highs of a period of time, by contrast with the present, you make both brighter and darker respectively. You don't make an alien extermination mission in a cave look darker by having dark flashbacks, you do it by contrasting it with its exact opposite. Just as you would in a painting.

The intro to Terminator 2 is a good example of this: kids playing in a park contrasted with a nuclear blast.

I'm ready for your arguments.

My employers are looking for a team of writers, in fact. If you want to apply, let me know how I could get a sample of your work, and if they like it, they will consider you. Is that what you want?

No, dredd works because his character works and is consistent.

The movie should be a standard one of her missions gone wrong, exactly like dredd.

Nobody cares about Samus as a character, we care about what she can do and how she's gonna outwit her enemy when pressed. Not how her innocent childhood was taken from her

>Are you fucking stupid?
Literally the only reason why you called OP a pedophile was because you thought he worked in Hollywood. It seems you are fucking stupid.

> Why?
Because it's fucking boring and has been done more than your dreaded Batman flashback

It won't be flashbacks, it'll be a whole storyline. Flashbacks, by definition, cannot be 10% of anything. This isn't "flash" at all.

Name a single movie with "10% of it being flashbacks".

I'm also open for changing Samus' skin color, to better fit the new environment that we've been writing for her early childhood. As suggested by my team, that could also help us edge in a more diverse approach when it comes to reaching a wider audience.

>No, dredd works because his character works and is consistent.
It works because the story doesn't span decades. They probably went for an Aristotle: unity of action, time, and place: it takes place within 24 hours, in the same location, and there's only one plot. That's why it works. That's why it's consistent. If the movie explored Dredd's mind over decades, from childhood, it wouldn't work. That's obvious.

>The movie should be a standard one of her missions gone wrong, exactly like dredd.
Dredd already exists and it's great. If you want Dredd, watch Dredd.

>Nobody cares about Samus as a character
Millions of people would disagree.

>Not how her innocent childhood was taken from her
But that's way more interesting.

So, a time skip? Or confusingly interweaved?

She's literally iron man, but got her suit designed for her by ancient space birds instead of making it herself. And then she uses it to go fight bad guys. Own that, or you're making the wrong movie and deserve the flop you'll get

>Because it's fucking boring and has been done more than your dreaded Batman flashback
Name five examples.

>I'm also open for changing Samus' skin color, to better fit the new environment that we've been writing for her early childhood. As suggested by my team, that could also help us edge in a more diverse approach when it comes to reaching a wider audience.

If you're going to troll as the OP, at least apply yourself and read the whole thing.

>That being said, there are a few points I managed to secure with my employers: Samus will look as you expect: tall, blonde, fit, strong, actually sexy and beautiful, blue eyes and all. make a film thats really pretty and more visual since a big part of the appeal of metroid prime is exploration of the alien world
you need dialogue but keep it to a minimum
a film i would describe as having minimal dialogue is conan the barbarian, the original. it also has pretty visuals i think. at the same time its also a popular mainstream movie that was popular even with the normans.

idk if thats something you write into a script though but go for that

also real sets please
cg is fine if appropriately used but real things are better even if they look "worse"

> Dredd already exists and it's great. If you want Dredd, watch Dredd.

Samus is dredd, basically. You should make dredd crossed with Alien instead of slow.mo drugs. That, as much as you try to worm away from, is what Metroid is.

>But that's way more interesting
Sakamoto please stop

Important to note that Dredd doesn't have characterisation in his movie, nor should he. However the film does give us a more typical main character with development in the form of the female rookie that gets assigned as his partner.

Maybe Samus could get a partner.

Maybe Samus could get a femboy maid like in that doujin IIRC.
Maybe you should just adapt the doujin.

We will

>So, a time skip? Or confusingly interweaved?
Two storylines. Nothing is for sure just yet and it could change, but that's the idea. Much of that will delve into her Chozo education too, and the difficulties in adapting to a new culture and species, and being both the odd one out and their messiah. At least that's what I'm interested in.

>She's literally iron man
She clearly won't for our project. Everyone's had enough of Iron Man for decades to come.

>Own that, or you're making the wrong movie and deserve the flop you'll get
Nothing in there contradicts the project. But this won't be Robert Downey Jr. , female edition.

You first on why your quick flashbacks are bad

Stolen innocence is boring if we have to watch it happen for more than five minutes
