Controls were also altered - steering is generally easier in DS.
Getting a rocket boost at the start of a race requires a dumb stylus minigame, or blowing into the mic for the Hovercraft.

I was never able to enjoy top-down racers.

I'm sure they enjoy it all the same, just like our parents and grandparents could have fun as kids with less than us. It's not so much about what you have as a kid, but the fact that you're a kid and you can play without a care in the world. We shouldn't assume kids don't know how to have fun.
