What is the akira of videogames?
Death Stranding
Dark souls because Akira is the Dark souls of anime movies
This is surprisingly accurate
Skyrim? Half-Life? Halo? Mario?
RUINER has some similarities but that might be a bit of a stretch

Phenomenal visuals but half-baked story? That describes a ton of games actually.
We were hoping it would be Cyberpunk 2077..
A hyper stylized product that pushed it's medium in new innovative ways from Japan that got over huge in the west?
Metal Gear Solid
So far ahead of its time and with such a high budget that it still hasn't even come close to being touch in its technical aspects?
I'm not really sure there is an equivalent
Akira really isn't that good. Like seriously, what is even the appeal of it? It's got a very basic story that fails to even capitalize on the more interesting parts by giving them very little screen time. Outside of 3 or 4 characters, no one has any depth. I guess the art style is nice but you don't even see that many dynamic scenes.
>extremely influential
>an amazing technical feat
>story starts out solid but gets unfocused and has an underwhelming ending
>gets too slow for its own good in many places
>overall a flawed masterpiece
I don't know. Maybe Final Fantasy 7? I wish I could say Bioshock Infinite, but that's no masterpiece.
Soundtrack music influced by Geinoh Yamashirogumi

You guys wanna talk overrated? Watch the End of Evangelion.
All style no substance so undertale
It's hard for zoomers to get this. But way back in the day before the Internet made anime/media/translations readily available it was a different kind of world. Cartoons were really just for kids. No one outside of businessmen and world travelers knew what the fuck Japan did. Akira is some straight David Lynch shock to the system shit. Everything about it is novel. "Why is this little kid stopping tank shells with his mind and killing people?!? What the fuck is this?"
I suspect the amazement has filtered down through weebs.
