However, Quinn twisted the message to make it look like there was no room for women in the gaming industry to suit her own needs and make her a victim. After that point, the well was basically fucking poisoned but everyone kept drinking from it anyway instead of finding a new platform with which to launch a crusade, thus dooming the movement. Quinn has since caused the actual death of at least one person and laughs her way to the bank.

Basically a dev who also happened to be a girl started a relationship with a journalist for good reviews, then she cheat on him with another journalist for more good reviews, first journalist breaks up with her and confess that he only gave her good reviews for their relationship, a lot of gamers got angry and started spamming the dev’s social media, she called for support to a far left feminist group, which starts a campaign about how girls are being oppressed in the videogame industry, the lgbt community tags in a calls for oppression too, afraid of this AAA companies starts with forced diversity staff so they don’t take heat.

So basically everyone here hated games journalists, much like they do now. As it turns out, Zoe Quinn (creator of shit game: depression quest) apparently slept with 5 reviewers to get her game good ratings. Whether this was actually true or not, I have no idea.
Basically this was either the straw that broke the camel's back or just the right concoction of bullshit to get all the anti feminists on board as well (feminists were the main subject of hate before trannies).
Some people wanted good video game journalism and some wanted feminists and SJWs out of vidya. For some reason, people who weren't clued in thought it made sense to look to the media to see what this anti media movement was about, as if they'd get an unbiased response. Quickly a narrative spawned that it was all fuelled by misogyny, and journalists tried to take down the idea of the "gamer". It didn't help that after youtube-sceptics and the like got on board, it was hard to distance gamergate from anti feminist groups, so it had a hard time making any changes.
All in all, nothing actually happened except for two groups saying things about each other.

You forget how wikileaks actually commented on gamergate by saying it wasn't just games journalism that was biased and corrupt.
Many people learned this when the mainstream media came to the defense of the games journalists and later, even Hollywood stepped in by making a few TV episodes about gamers murdering a female games journalist for sexist reasons.
Around the same time, even social media turned on gamergate. Twitter and Facebook actually hired some of these women for the express purpose of censoring "harassment". Gamergate is literally the first instance when social media (including plebbit and Zig Forums) began heavily censoring people and topics.

If you actually paid attention during the entire thing, you were forced to wake up and realize how shitty things had become. If you paid attention, you were forced to realize that these fuckers had taken complete control of the entire entertainment and news apparatus of the world, and in this they weren't afraid to use it for propaganda and lies.

The backlash from non-gaming media was a response to the story of gamergate, but it doesn't need mentioning if you're just explaining what gamergate was.
In regards to the idea that the gaming press was influencing the world: they were not puppet masters, but a part of the machine spinning the narrative.
