the level design in doom games are fucking garbage. The engine is fucking great, the enemies are fun, the weapons are fantastic, but the maps are so fucking trash that they're 'good' at their best. The modding community made that abundantly clear not months after the map making tools were made available to the public

Just like that quote from the Masters of Doom book, they didn't look nice but they were very fun. There is absolutely nothing wrong with how his levels play and in some cases they surpass Romero's levels
