What was online gaming like in the late 90s/early 2000s?
Crappy unless you had a broadband connection
kinda like the legend of zelda on NES when you play it for the first time
Better than now due to games then having souls and not being filled with super clean and fake and soulless looking UIs and Microtransactions.
which was very common
it was simple fun and there was so much less genuinely angry toxic people trying to become rank 1 pro faggots.
extremely comfy having a list of dedicated servers to choose from and then favorite. kind of like bar hopping
It was based. No trannies, no normies, people were actually more social and open to forming friendships online. I have people I met online from late 90s and early 2000s that I'm still in contact with. I was even a groomsman in one of their weddings. It was a great time, definitely one of those things where you just had to be there to understand.
>online gaming
best of multi that time was LAN gaming
Ping of 120 was considered low.
less turd worlders and yurofags and it was a good thing
there were plenty of fun servers, don't be a fag
1.5 and 1.6 at internet cafes were the best.
Counter-Strike was shit.
You should have posted an image of TFC.
not true. PSO was the first game i played online and i had dial up until like 2002. It was awesome. There are a decent amount of games that can function perfectly fine on dial up.
cs is better than your favorite games
shit i might have even played ff11 on dial up but i dont really remember.
It was slow
It was shitty
It was unstable
Don’t believe the lies
this thread is just gonna get a bunch of retarded comments from zoomers who think they know how it was.
Post your go-to online game at the time.
yo old fags what was that tank game but it was like worms and one of the secret tanks was a fucking guy riding a dragon. that shit was based. i used to play that shit all the time in my computer classes in highschool. this was like early 2000s.
Define normie, because everyone was playing cs 1.6 in my city.
Fun and exciting but that's in part because it was the first time I was playing online (Delta Force 2). Definitely less toxicity than today though
REMEMBER GUNBOUND BOYS
Enemy Territory ftw
I miss people using t3h, 0wn and j00.
Same as ever, like the kids screaming at the mic or the guy who plays shitty music thinking he's the shit.
In fact since online gaming is bigger than ever, you take what i said and triple it down.
The enemy is weakened!
WUNDERBAR
I miss going to PC bangs
Edgy but based.
GOOD GAY
No care in the world other than my parents screaming at me to do something else and me crying
Based af. No matchmaking so instead you had a server browser. When you found servers you liked to favorited them and joined the server community. The most competitive people got was raising their rank on the server which was mostly about time played rather than raw skill, but still gave you something to brag about. Lots of custom content and the developers encouraged it. Datamining didn’t really exist and you had to go out of your way to learn what the meta was, which made people play the way that was most fun for them. It was overall a simpler and more pure experience than today. Games weren’t figured out in a week back then.
this guy gets it
Metafags need to get fucking killed

Plus you had diverse communities across all different genres. It was unironically a better time.
Connection issues and poorly running games aside it was fucking fantastic. It was skill based, no p2w shit, no endless grind for unlocks, no lootboxes etc, no bans for banter which played huge role in psychological warfare against your opponents.
I played a ton of HL1 mods and Operation Flashpoint. Also a bit of RuneScape and some MSN Zone games like AoE and R6: Rogue Spear.
Quake 3 was fine on dial-up. The same issues that broadband faces (Ping) are the same on dial-up. The only difference is the amount of bandwidth/how much is put into the pipe before the "roof" is hit now.
