Imagine being so autistic you make up rules that directly contradict the creative force behind the game.

I have a feeling that this really isn't about iconography at all. This constant bickering feels like the delusional strawman of saltfags and Antifags who cannot accept a fighter being in the game. Deny it all you want, these characters are still iconic, no matter how much you hate them.

Revenue doesn't determine icon status, otherwise Mash from FGO should be more iconic than Zelda. Because FGO's total lifetime revenue surpassed that of the whole Zelda series.

Byleth isn't ingrained into popular culture. The average person wouldn't know who Byleth even is, but most of them will know or at least have an idea who Mario and Pikachu are. Besides, even if he's from the best selling FE game, that still isn't an impressive number compared to a lot of other series (even games that sold more than Three Houses aren't iconic)

Byleth isn't even the most iconic character from Three Houses. Edelgard was pushed to the forefront of attention in marketing almost instantly.

Edelgard isn't as wise of a choice for Smash as Byleth, not only can she not do as much but it shows bias towards a particular house and could cause players looking her up to spoil the twist for themselves. Not that Smash cares about spoilers at all.

I would just remove Corrin and leave it at that. That doesn’t fix the other problems with some characters though like all 3 Links being identical and Samus’ entire moveset
