because automata was normie-worthy and nier was not. automata was a great title full of what would be a generally approved definition of quality, good combat, no cheap over-the-top japanese epicness. it was a game that could be enjoyed by average joe, meanwhile nier was artsy-hidden-gem mix of bad jank and amazing story.

If anything, it's because it had any marketing. First Nier was barely noticeable, i remember it as "this game that had good music" because i've seen it being mentioned by some niche reviewer, not more. Nier was never targeted towards mainstream market until Automata, and that's why it got popular along with Automata. Sure, i bet toobie ass was a nice attention grab, but i doubt people were actually unironically playing it for this ass, they knew exactly what they're getting into.

The first game's lack of marketing is a good point, but there's no denying that Nier:A had incredible success with its viral marketing.
