For a lot of keyboards, hitting modifier keys like control and left shift doesn't occupy signal slots like the alphanumeric keys would do. If you were to hold down \ while also holding down two other keys, the signal for \ would not be registered. But due to the function of modifier keys, they're exempted from that limitation.
