Can't believe no one has bettered the comfy HOMM 3 formula.
HOMM 5 came pretty close, but all the graphical innovations seem very dated now, whereas HOMM 3 still looks pretty cool.

How i menaged to play it so much? Well, its literaly first game i played, and since then i play in now and then, sometimes on multi, sometimes pushing to max scores on singleplayer. Nowdays always on hota, but i have played all the bigger mods (master of puppets, wog, era2, vcmi). Now i think of it i played it a lot more than 2k hours.
