Why is GoldenEye so revered?

Play story-heavy PC FPS from 1997 with hours of cutscenes where gameplay was obviously secondary to the story: youtube.com/watch?v=FDpNrzjW_JA
>levels are massive, sprawling non-linear and open environments with multiple layers of verticality with non-hostile NPCs and objectives that require careful exploration and where different approaches (such as stealth) are possible
>enemies actually dodge around, try to take cover and warn their allies
>how you play through levels has consequences and affects how you experience the rest of the game

Play GoldenEye, supposedly the greatest FPS ever, also released in 1997: youtube.com/watch?v=Yqf6MNydn-U
>levels are glorified corridors that are flat and lacking in verticality (you can't even jump)
>enemies are deaf paraplegics who can't hear gunfire from 10 feet away and who stand stockstill and play ridiculously exaggerated 10-second long hit animations that render them defenseless while you pepper them with bullets
Nice music though.

So why exactly is GoldenEye held in such high regard? It's treated as if it's the single most important FPS ever made, both on Zig Forums and elsewhere.

Did you seriously make a new thread after the last thread 404'd?

Mostly just the Iconic multiplayer
It was fairly accessible & feasible to play this with a couple of friends, and it was fun.

You were supposed to play with friends.

damn OP is under a lot of cope after that last thread

Not a very convincing argument. Everything is better when you do it with friends.

So basically GoldenEye was so shit that the only redeeming thing was a factor external to the game (friends)

Its basically the pre-halo console babbys first fps.
And to imagine that Quake 2 was released few months later...

I love it when people scuttle off to make their own thread like a little blankie fortress to feel better in. Fucking lawls

Because there wasn't really anything else like it on a console at the time. The multiplayer was the main highlight for most people, while the single player mode is regarded for how closely it follows the plot of the film.

>It's treated as if it's the single most important FPS ever made, both on Zig Forums and elsewhere.
That's DOOM kiddo. I've never heard anyone say goldeneye was a good game, just great fun to play with your mates. Is that why you didn't like it, OP? Never had anyone to play with?

>glorified corridors that are flat and lacking in verticality
so you've never played GoldenEye? ok then

People even remember it just for this.

>muh generic FPS good guy shoot bad guys and mosters while listening to rock music

>first time FPS on console, play as James Bond in what is possibly the best movie of the franchise, feel like a secret agent with all the gadgets anddifferent objectives and stuff and have some friens come over, plug 4 controllers and have a fucking blast of mixed rage and laughter

Goldeneye is one of the best games of all time you fucking faggot zoomer

>I've never heard anyone say goldeneye was a good game

>In 2011, the game was selected as one of 80 titles from the past 40 years to be placed in the Art of Video Games exhibit in the Smithsonian American Art Museum.[55]

>GoldenEye 007 is frequently cited as one of the greatest video games of all time. Only a month after publishing its review of the game, Electronic Gaming Monthly ranked it the 25th best console video game of all time, calling it "easily the best movie game, and, more importantly, the best first-person game ever." and in 2010 Nintendo Power listed GoldenEye 007 as one of the greatest multiplayer experiences in Nintendo history, stating that it is remembered as one of the finest examples of a first-person shooter.[44]

>In a 2000 poll, readers of Computer and Video Games voted GoldenEye 007 into first place in a list of "the hundred greatest video games",[45]

>On the game's original release, Edge awarded it a score of nine out of ten, but in 2013, with the benefit of hindsight, the magazine concluded that it should have received its highest score.[54]

Doomclone vs innovative 3D game.

>>enemies are deaf paraplegics who can't hear gunfire from 10 feet away and who stand stockstill and play ridiculously exaggerated 10-second long hit animations that render them defenseless while you pepper them with bullets

So you never played the game then.

>what is possibly the best movie of the franchise
I really wouldn't go that far. It's the best of Brosnan's four but it's not the best in the entire series.

>Oh look it's another zoomer thread asking why he can't understand the context of time

>90's FPS
>generic
GoldenEye wishes it had even a fraction of the personality and fun gameplay of those 'generic FPS'.

>So you never played the game then.
I have. Even the developers of the game admitted they deliberately designed the game like that, because controllers were so terribly slow and inaccurate to aim with that your shots had to stunlock the enemy by making their hit reactions ridiculously lengthy and exaggerated, preventing them for firing back or taking cover.

>here's 3 games that are just reskins of 1
wow so much personality.

For me its kinda hard to decide.
I personally prefer the Daniel craig era bond because it feels like a sort of a culmination of the tropes in the previous parts of the series.
Its like picking out your favorite child, you just cant really do it.

because you can shoot people in the dick from far away

>praises a game that came out at the same time as goldeneye
>zoomer
You GoldenEye fans are really something special. As in, special needs kids who are literally retarded.

>enemies are deaf paraplegics who can't hear gunfire from 10 feet away

Simply false. Notifying enemies through gunfire is even a commonly used strategy. Look at this video, where near the start of the level, he fires 6 shots at the ground which is loud enough to alert guards to make them open a door so that he doesn't have to wait to go inside the room.

youtube.com/watch?v=2jFtYKnr9Us

The guards are not even in the same room and they still hear the shots. You are lying out your ass, faggot.

because consolefags are retarded

fun at 10 frames per second

>Simply false.
youtube.com/watch?v=Yqf6MNydn-U

Literally tjhe beginning of the video. 0;30. You shoot an enemy at the stairs right in front of that tunnel, yet the enemies standing at the entrance of the tunnel don't even react.

this is how well quake 2 ran in 1997

Attached: Quake 2 software mode.jpg (709x205, 64.77K)

Yes

That's still more than triple the performance of GoldenEye.

I bet you also fail to understand why Ocarina of Time is so revered

It's no Perfect Dark, true.

Okay, so you're just shitposting then. It was popular because it was a good movie game at the time and multiplayer was fun af.

>33.4 vs GoldenEye's 10 fps
So it ran three times as fast while also having far better graphics?

Nice projection

I think you should go look up the definition of "10 feet". Also watch actual N64 hardware video, not shitty emulator 60 FPS mouse-and-keyboard video recorded by a monkey with barely functional settings.

Dark Forces 2 looks and plays like a glorified Doom/Quake clone. GoldenEye is a legit espionage game which strove for what Martin Hollis called "cinematic realism". Even something as simple as the game's audio design is leaps and bounds beyond. The way bullets go "kerpeeeeew" as they whizz past your head, for instance. The multilayered audio effects for each gunshot.
>levels are glorified corridors that are flat and lacking in verticality (you can't even jump)
Rare argued that jumping in FPS games looks stupid. They were right.
>enemies are deaf paraplegics who can't hear gunfire from 10 feet away and who stand stockstill and play ridiculously exaggerated 10-second long hit animations that render them defenseless while you pepper them with bullets
Firstly, GoldenEye's general ideas around stealth design are still being used in AAA games today. Secondly, the animations were part of the "cinematic realism" push. Have you never watched a Bond movie? Particularly Brosnan one?
youtu.be/EUniJJ5EXa8?t=59
Everything about GoldenEye as a game is an attempt to translate the visual language of this movie and movies like it into gameplay mechanics and videogame aesthetics. Why do you think GoldenEye makes enemies get throw sideways by explosions? Because that's how movies do it. GoldenEye is in stark contrast to many contemporaries which were more interested in being like Doom than rethinking what an FPS game should be.

out of that list, only the P2 300 had been released in 1997 actually, which ran at 20.9 FPS on average that's quite similar to goldeneye

Attached: goldeneye_frame.webm (640x360, 2.84M)

>my $5000 PC is faster than a $300 console checkmate

see not to mention that the p2 300 alone cost like 3x-4x more than an entire n64

>Rare argued that jumping in FPS games looks stupid. They were right.
Must be why every other FPS (besides the earliest doom clones) has jumping. All those thousands of other FPS that let you jump, no they were failures of game design and got it completely wrong.

Fucking kill yourself, you pathetic fanboy.

>Rare argued that jumping in FPS games looks stupid.
Source?

This is one of those threads where OP gets bootyblasted because noone goes along with his autism lmao

this desu

as someone who loved playing Goldneye as a little kid it has not aged well and there were probably better FPSes at the time on PC

>you don't share my opinion you should kill yourself

lol autism

>craig era
That's the worst era of James Bond though.
