The game is fantastic, but why does it have the most deadpan, emotionless voice acting of any game with its level of prestige? SKYRIM of all games has better voice acting!

Because games used to be made by nerds in their garage and not some soulless corporation.

In JC's case it's him deliberately being a tryhard because he shares a VA with Paul, who sounds like a normal person

For the rest it's just a bunch of bargain basement VA's with terrible direction

Wasn’t Ion Storm at LEAST a AA company at the time? Besides, if I knew the voices would sound like THAT, then, I’d just go the 90’s JRPG route.

The exact moment videogames became commercially viable, there were people milking them for money over doing it for love of the medium

That almost certainly includes several games you think have "soul"

>Game came out AFTER Blood Omen and Soul Reaver, both of which are considered the pinnacle of voice acting in vidya

Your point, sire?

to me the acting of Pop Page is one of the best ever noticed bin video games.
Simons, Paul and Helios/Icarus where also very good

i agree that there where some really retarded voiceacting, but in the end nothing but MEME material

>games being well made is soulless

I love the robotic voices. Do people really think that it would be better if it was all theatrical and shit?

I think it'd be better if it was good

JC's voice acting is the way it is because they wanted to avoid him showing emotion that the player may not share.

Then have a silent protag. I hate when games do this, when one characteristic of the protag is left to the player to decide, but another is set in stone.

It has a shit ton of dialogue, and a lot of the VA was just done by the dev team in a rush. Less stock was put in the performances, and more into the quality of writing.

J.C. is monotone as to not characterise him too much, so the player can roleplay as him. If he emoted too much it might suggest he believes one thing or another, whereas now you can make him whoever you want. I actually really like this, he really feels like a stone cold agent who is barely human anymore, and some of his completely deadpan responses are hilarious and really help keep the game entertaining without breaking the darker atmosphere. Despite being an autist with no personality, he's actually extremely memorable.

See: and

Most of the resources went to Daikatana.

What a shame.

A BOMB.

Did you miss the part where I explained why it works? It makes perfect sense that he is so lifeless, he is augmented to the point he has lost much of his humanity, his deadpan delivery feels like a natural extension of that.

Maybe you should try getting a job?

Never tried it

Deus Ex has great voice acting

sometimes yes, sometimes it is really bad.
but even then, it's rather funny than just bad

Because JC is some augmented autistic robot and not a Chad. Everyone elses voice acting is fine.

dont hate on ion storm, hate on your dad for raising a shit kid

>but why does it have the most deadpan, emotionless voice acting of any game with its level of prestige
So you didn't get the Helios or Iluminati ending, huh?
Also, Paul

Doesn't sound bad at all. The real culprit are all the terrible foreign accents in Hong Kong and Paris (which don't even make sense, since by 2050, the world will be a lot more globalized).

>JC is fuckin' cool
>The sequel makes him into a fucking crazy god complex faggot
Fuck man, the sequel annoyed me so fucking much.

Invisible War is pure kino. It actually explores the fallout of what happens when a human tries to merge with an A.I.

upset because I only discovered this line because of memes. As soon as the maintenance guy started talking weird I batoned him.

Shame the gameplay and level design were both atrocious. Because that's what everyone who played Deus Ex wanted, a bunch of enclosed narrow environments!

What a shame.
