Nope, they made him young and not as wised up in red dead and even went as far as to belittle his scars to lessen his legend because he was such a popular/well received character they feared any new character could never live up to him, especially if he was going to be in the same game not as the main character

Red Dead 2 tries its hardest to paint him as a coward, ran away from the gang and family responsibilites for a year, insinuated he couldn't deal with a pack of wolves on his own, left him with the inability to swim so people would have fonder memories of playing as arthur etc, they tried really hard to shit on him

Red Dead 1 John was a badass though. They retroactively wrote all that shit into red dead 2, there was no indication whatsoever in red dead redemption that he 'was never cut out for it'. He single handedly kills/apprehends his entire former gang.

They did that because John grows into who he's supposed to be in 1 through 2. It's not only cements Arthur as the kindest hearted person in the group, but also sets John on the path he needs to be on. These guys are fuckups, there's nothing wrong with John being a bumbling fool until he man's the fuck up and does what he's supposed to.

I don't know if I agree. John is a necessary part of the tension in the group. It keeps you on the hook waiting to see when he becomes the dude you know from 1. It would have been boring as fuck to basically see John and Arthur both be the buddy buddy rational level headed guys opposing dutch at every turn. John is very much the guy that, when shit hits the fan, either runs and tucks tail, or when the situation has hit a head so badly man's up at the last second and realizes he's been a fuck up. For me, John was as good in 2 as he was in 1.

This game to me basically said 'arthur is the reason john is a man, everything good about john came from good 'ol arthur. I loved arthur but that doesn't sit right with me.

Trevors going to get a taste of his own medicine in GTA 6. The new protagonist is going to have to do a mission where he transfers a guy with a bag over his head to his execution. When the bag gets pulled off of his head it's revealed that its Trevor and the new protagonist has cut open his chest and pull out his heart and make him eat it before he dies.

Because the rest of the cast is fucking boring and I loathe them for taking up screentime.

That's kinda the point I was trying to make. Honestly, Trevor is the most in-character character in the series.
