Sun and Moon still sold really well, its at like 16.18 million whereas Sword/Shield was at 17.37 million (Probably closer to 18 million now) as of March 2020.
Honestly, a huge part of that is the huge amount of Switches out in the wild plus it being the first proper Pokemon game for the system (not counting Lets Go). I will say this: Sun and Moon seem like they were much better received then Sword and Shield was by most people.

No one was actually hyped for the setting, story or new features
It was all about the Switch, and people running dry of games so they "might as well try the new Pokemon"
It's why they spread out all mainline game releases, so that you run out of gameplay and "might as well try the other big Nintendo thing"
As far as I can tell, no one was appreciating the lazy animation porting, the Pokedex cuts, giga max feature, story or setting
On any other console, this game would've flopped hard
