What went wrong with Retro's revival of the series?

These. Compare DKC1 to DKC2 and even DKC3 had enough to stand out as its own game, no matter how you feel about it. Tropical Freeze wasn't even supposed to happen, Returns was meant to be a one-off until it exceeded Nintendo's expectations.

Tropical Freeze's only flaws are having repetitive bonus rooms and world map's pretty basic, otherwise everything about is perfect and easily has the best level variety in the series.

It's very hard to describe the aesthetic quality of something for comparison sake with objective descriptors. But suffice to say you're blind if you think DKCTF looks better than DKC2, especially if you play the latter as it was meant to be viewed on a CRT.

Squawks levels, man. I honestly only need Squawks and Rambi for gameplay, but the others are still nice for variation and flavor.

I played it once. Rolled through an enemy and died to the enemy behind it instead of chain rolling.

Nostalgia, I like them better than the originals and I played the shit out of 1 and 2 as a kid.

Nintendo wouldn't allow the return of Kremlings until Sakurai cashed in his good boy points for Ultimate.

Now that the games aren't radically better looking than their contemporaries they're no longer special

The silhouette levers in Returns and Tropical Freeze were downright beautiful.
