Did guns make melee combat obsolete? What's the modern or sci-fi equivalent to the sword?
Did guns make melee combat obsolete? What's the modern or sci-fi equivalent to the sword?
>What's the modern or sci-fi equivalent to the sword?
lightsabers, laser swords
yeah kind of strange how guns made swords obsolete huh unless you use a knife to assassian kill or stab someone once and they die
Knives are still incredibly useful at close distances
combat knife or literally ANYTHING similar.
Do you even play games?
>Did guns make melee combat obsolete?
Yes. Go ask or for the details, or amazon/your local library, search "history of warfare/weapons" and read any of the mothefucking books there.
Sci-fi equivelant? Lightsabers.
Modern Equivalent? Tacticool machetes/combat knives.
Guns were the logical conclusion of man-to-man warfare. The most consistently utilized and most effective weapons prior to the invention of guns throughout pretty much all of human history were variants on polearms. Being able to do damage while being out of range of the enemy's general melee range is a huge advantage. A gun is both easier to use and has a much greater distance you can do damage from.
>plasma/laser swords
>relies on magic powers to deflect ranged projectiles
Also in most games guns are still more effective even in close quarters than melee due to the damage and range possible. The only way they offset this is by making melee deal ridiculous amounts of damage despite it being weaker than the average rifle shot.
The machete. Still used in South America, several Pacific archipelagos, and Africa.
>cyborgs are resistant to small arms fire
>the most efficient way to take them out is with a high frequency blade
Are there any other games that do something similar to this?
Plasma/electric swords, high frequency blades, jet swords. There's a lot of wacky scifi shit you can pull off with melee weapons, and you can make them useful by having advanced armors or shields
>Did guns make melee combat obsolete?
Of course they did. That's a stupid question.
sounds bullshit
I wish there was a game where you kill terrorists as a knight with a gunsword
>What's the modern or sci-fi equivalent to the sword?
Turning yourself into a cyborg so you can use a sword to cut the bullets out of the air
Star Wars KOTOR explained the resurgence in swords and melee weapons at that time in the lore as advancements in shield technology making blaster fire alot less effective
>putting yourself in danger by using melee weapons instead of using EMPs or hacking their systems
absolute grug mentality, user
Not a game but in Dune, if you shoot someone wearing a shield with a typical laser gun it creates a nuclear explosion. So melee weapons are used to kill without getting yourself blown up too.
>implying grug mentality is a bad thing
Bows did that. Specifically longbows and war bows
the better question is what comes after laser guns and laser swords?
or are videogames doomed to just have knives/swords/bows/guns/lasers til the end of time?
when cyborgs and robots have artificial muscles and wires, it will make sense for blades being the most effective way at cutting/disabling them
Machete.
Which then, ironically, led to the resurgence of projectile weapons aka "slug throwers."
Incorrect.
>guns
>infantry
lol go back to the 18th century grandpa, nowadays its fucking artillery, missiles and drones
melee will never come back because if somehow there is a way to stop projectiles, there wont be a way to make melee have more power than a projectile, if you thing there will be a high vibration melee weapon, there will be absolutely a better ranged weapon using the same technology
>inb4 ur talking bullshit
nowadays the creation of level 5 nij body armor makes any ammo that isn't tungsten based worthless, and tungsten is too hard to create, so the solution rather than going back to melee is to make even more powerful projectiles or simply adding more explosives to infantry, basically power creeping the ranged skirmish meta, melee wont ever come back, there is a reason why soldiers get taught some shitty kind of box just to make them feel useful but don't train anything harder than that
What's the point in blowing up everyone and clearing a place out if you don't have infantry to hold it afterwards?
you create a new character
what weapon do you give him to make him standout from the billions of other vg characters?
>holding something
>annexing in the anno domini 2020
>not bombing the hell out of a place and then subverting from inside as a client state
Zip 22
