First of all Mara is not a revered figure, so making fun of it isn't offensive in any way. Secondly, Mara is the embodiment and personification of temptation so a phallic form does make sense. Yes, and that's how it's in the Bible as well. Satan quite literally means "adversary" in the bible, and he could be one or many angels (Mastema could have been one of many Satans). Regardless, he serves as a judge, often tempting humans and trying to prove to God that they aren't worth of His trust. The Book of Job is a good exemple of that, where God and Satan essentially make a friendly bet about the strength of Job's faith. The idea of Satan being a force of evil that opposed God, the struggle of good vs evil, wasn't present at first, and was likely introduced by contact with other religions, like Zoroastrism (or atleast that's Nietzsche's take on it).
Lucifer is essentially fanfiction from Paradise Lost turned cannon, likely being based on older myths like that of the Morning Star, venus, which tried to take the place of the Sun-god (Baal), by being the first to shine on the sky, only to lose and by cast down from the heavens. The word Lucifer ("bringer of light") itself comes from a mistranslation on, I believe, the King James bible, where it replaced the term "Morning Star".
Since then, "Satan", "Lucifer", "Devil", "Beelzebub", etc etc have all become interchangeable in informal speech, but in their origins they were all very different figures.
Though he does turn against God in SMT2, as he judges YHVH himself for being responsible for the crime of genocide, which is pretty awesome.
