I actually thought that what was shown at the state of play was actually pretty good.
It made me think this is what the first game should have been and I was impressed with the world building and factions that were talked about.
However, knowing how Joel dies, I can't buy this game. I can accept that he dies given the ending of the first game but his death seems so unsatisfying, cheap and in poor taste.

They're trying to appeal to the masses while simultaneously trying to create something realistic, dark, gritty--whatever tone it takes to match Joel's demise. You need a really good writer to combine those two things, and I think the original game did a pretty good job doing it.
I don't know what the fuck this sequel is supposed to be though. It's just so...misguided. They should focus on gameplay, and on the side I would prefer they did their research on what you talked about in your spoiler tag rather than some bullshit about justice and retribution. They think this is some prestige TV show, but they're just not good enough writers. That's why it's not working.
