Fuck, I fucked up. This thread is all wrong.
Dragon's Dogma just has this ineffable quality that nothing else has. More than any other game I've played, it fulfills the potential of what a D&D-like video game could be.
There was D&D, and then when video games came around, obviously people tried to adapt it to the new medium. D&D is the foundation for the "RPG mechanics" we're all used to, stats/hp/xp/levels etc. Tons of old D&D inspired vidya.
But we didn't have the technology back then, that could really translate the spirit of D&D but with real-time action. We have the technology now, but very few are still trying to emulate that spirit. We only really have Dragon's Dogma.
Berserk
Death is coming..
Why is it so hard to make Mercedes the beloved? Every playthrough I talk to her last with max affection and I always get someone lame instead. FUCK why does she have to disappear from the game at such an inconvenient time.
It's worth the effort though, you get to see her in a different outfit. She's way happier as a housewife, poor bb
It's heartbreaking because of what it could've been, to clarify. I think what it is is wonderful, and I agree it captures that adventuring spirit well. What it is lacking is in depth NPC social features, direct shaping of the pawn's personality and the MOOOOOON!

You're right, it is heartbreaking. It could even get more heartbreaking... Can you imagine how disappointing it'd be if DD2 actually got made, but it wasn't good? Or if Itsuno got gangraped by goblins and died before getting to make it? So many things could happen.
I'm just glad we got what we got. Especially reading how the localization was done, and seeing some of the alternate character designs that were under consideration... it could've been so much worse.
D&D wasn't just about the combat you retard. Pre-made stories and our shitty grasp on AI is still nothing compared to a proper DM
>elder ogre are attracted to man
>it catches a female and bits her
>gets stun and falls down
perfect plan if you play female. let the ogre bite you.
Yeah too bad it's a shame no body genuinely wants to DM because players have no chill and turn everything into a meme nightmare for each other now days
>if you play female. let the ogre bite you.
lewd
Seriously? I didn't know that happens, that's hilarious. Does the same thing happen to normal ogres if they grab a male character?
>D&D wasn't just about the combat
Yes yes exactly, D&D is about a lot of things, combat is just one aspect of it. But it's also about imagination, and creation, and expression through roleplaying, and just doing things to see what happens.
The D&D-spirit things that Dogma does, that other games don't:
>huge amount of freedom in character creation
>height&weight have mechanical consequences
>lanterns go out when they get wet
>can throw explosives at ores to mine them
>can grapple/be grappled by enemies large and small
>can pick up dead eye enemies and use their eyebeams to petrify other foes
>can use smaller corpses as bait for bigger monsters
I'm sure other people can think of more, there's already other examples in this thread, but the level of interactivity is insane...
no idea. found this one out recently and i owned the game for years.
unfinished
What the fuck is wrong with you. DnD in no way is simulated by Dragons Dogma. Dungeniering experience? Maybe, but even then games like Wizardry are closer to how DnD actually feels.
>huge amount of freedom in character creation
There are dozens of games with equal character creation and progression, there is absolutely nothing that DD does which is more "freeform" or open than other games.
How does DD even compare to something like DOS 2?
>height&weight have mechanical consequences
This is not a big enough feature to be listed on its own, come on you are grasping at straws, this is like saying that Skyrim having wieghted items is a feature.
>Lanterns go out when they get wet
Again, a non-feature and other games have that.
>can throw explosives at ores to mine them
>can grapple/be grappled by enemies large and small
>can pick up dead eye enemies and use their eyebeams to petrify other foes
>can use smaller corpses as bait for bigger monsters
You are basically listing cool minor features which contribute to gameplay but in no way contribute to DnD feel, I don't understand you. Worldbuilding of Morrowind, character system of Wizardry or even more modern CRPGs like Divinity OS2 are a lot closer to what tabletop games feel like and they unlike Dragons Dogma don't have shit quests without any actual roleplaying.
non-boring
"almost good"
TOO good
when I say DD has D&D-spirit I'm mostly referring to the freedom in character creation and the level of interactivity with the world and the enemies. in most vidya you don't get to say shit like
>maybe I can attack this monster's weapon arm to make him drop his club
>maybe if we all grab onto this thing and someone attacks his legs then he'll fall over
>maybe I can blind this thing by pumping arrows into his only eye
>maybe this one-eyed creature is also susceptible to magical blindness
and have it actually work.
The pawn system is still one of the best forms of player made content I've ever seen. Pawns actually felt distinct, like there was a personality to them. I had favorites.
The combat also felt great. It was just severely undermined by a horrible damage calculation system underlying it.
And then night time being legitimately tough and immersive. Lights and lamps being a real factor.
What an unbelievable gem of a game. But I can also see why some people might hate it.
>there is absolutely nothing that DD does which is more "freeform" or open than other games
Body types, faces, and armor combinations my dude. Boot up DOS 2 and try to make a short character, or a fat one. Try to only dress your character in stuff that fits their personality. In DDDA you can make almost any kind of person you can imagine, and there are combinations of clothing and armor that will make sense on that character. No other vidya I've heard of comes close to that level of characterization.
>You are basically listing cool minor features which contribute to gameplay but in no way contribute to DnD feel
A huge part of D&D is using your knowledge of the world & your surroundings to come up with novel solutions, as well as having to deal with novel problems. That is very hard to replicate in vidya so most people don't even try. The ones that do, tend not to have fun real-time action (eg dwarf fortress). Dragon's Dogma has done more than any other video game to synthesize fun action with interactive/creative problem solving.
Same. I am dying for a game that expands upon this existing Pawn system and adds further depth to it.
mediocre
>pawn system
Yessss. It's so original, and so rewarding. I would love to see it refined a bit more.
We're so lucky to have this game.
Nigga why are you teaching me what DnD is, my neighbor im Tbilisi is Mark Rein-Hagen, you know, the dude that created Vampire the Masquarade, and I am basically the only dude that runs tabletop games in my fucking country. I have played all editions of DnD and have folders full of homebrews, you aren't the only nigger on this planet that played DnD.
What I am saying is that you are describing features that others games also have or have alternatives of, for example Breath of the Wild has insane level of interactivity with the world while VR games like Blade and Sorcery allow you to do shit with your body that isn't even possible in a conventional gaming sense.
These features don't make it more or less DnD, core tenants of DnD inspired RPGs are this
>Character progression, stats, classes, levels etc.
>Item progression and a huge variety of gear through looting or crafting
and most important of all
>ROLEPLAYING
a game like DOS2 has far more in common with totality of what DnD has than Dragons Dogma, DD is like a one-shot dungeon delving experience of DnD turned into a game.
Now I am not saying that DD is a bad game either, it has really solid combat and fun mechanics, but it is not a good RPG by any stretch and is woefully unfinished.
