Friday Night and Saturday night threads are the best of Zig Forums. Whenever a shitpost thread gets posted that focuses on a TV show under the guise of videogame discussion, those threads end up being the best this board has to offer as well. Jannies be damned.

There's literally nothing wrong with movie games like Detroit or Heavy Rain. They can exist perfectly fine as their own separate niche. I don't see how you the same board can hold up old point and click adventure games as paragons of gaming excellence but take issue with games like Detroit which are basically elaborate point and click adventures only with super fancy graphics. Also when you play a "movie inspired" "cinematic" game like Last of Us you spend a lot of time in boring, unskippable walking non-cutscenes and other such scripted sequences which actually interrupt the "real" gameplay, which is more jarring. These are the real "movie games" which deserve scorn, not actual games that are just trying to literally be interactive movies. When you call Detroit a "movie game" you're literally complimenting David Cage.

And what's the one thing you CAN'T do when you watch a movie? Affect the plot. Detroit has an impressive number of endings, and it has the flowcharts to prove it, but it will never be enough for the people on this board. It will always be decried as "fake choices" and lumped in with Telltale games, which straight up ARE full of fake choices. No matter what happens you will ALWAYS end up in that shop with Lee and Clem, and you will always be presented with the same choice. Compare that to the endings of Detroit and it's not even in the same league.

Now this is a hot tamale. I will say as much as I enjoyed the story and world of FF8 the gameplay to start with us truly cancerous and the tutorials tell you to do shit you can't even do with your character at the time which makes it even more frustrating. That plus the dialogue to start with "go talk to a wall" made me want to quit after about 5 hours. I'm happy I didn't but FF8 is extremely flawed and arguably one of the worst games in the series despite being one of its best stories

Oh yeah you can hate Cage games for having cringeworthy writing, I wouldn't argue with that, I personally have this weird thing where the stories being full of extremely basic cliches doesn't really bother me, I actually kind of ironically and unironically enjoy the bad writing at the same time. Sometimes he uses cliches and stuff well, the Connor and Hank hard boiled buddy cop stuff was great for instance. I mean overall the actual "writing" isn't good sure, but I'm more interested in simply experimenting with how many different ways things can play out, how does the game handle specific weird character choices, etc. I've just always had a fascinating with CYOA books and these games scratch that itch in a really great way, and ONLY these games, by not having "real" gameplay he can focus on an absurd amount of variation and possible different story branches.

I hated trails of coldsteel and its shills. Final fantasy 8 is a better game than 7 and 10. Squall is my favorite FF protagonist. Cloud’s okay, but Tidus and his game fucking suck.

Yeah. Leaving matters like gameplay and such aside, I think Dark Souls is a good example of striking the right balance. Gwynevere's breasts are extremely large, but it doesn't mess too much with the atmosphere or 'seriousness' (to the extent that you can say that of a video game). Occasional sexuality put in there is fine, but it needs to get the balance right or just admit to being a ridiculous fanservice game.
