What does it mean for a game to age badly?

What does it mean for a game to age badly?
Why would games become worse over time?

A better term for it would be dated.

Mechanics and technology advance making some older games obsolete.
If a game was praised for visuals or introduction of a mechanic that becomes widely used and polished then early entries might just be frustrating.
Goldeneye is a good example. Everyone has nostalgia for it but forgets how god awful the controls were after the fact.

It means a zoomer is trying to critique something that existed long before they were born.

Goldeneye is the greatest FPS of all time. Nothing comes close. Any game released on the N64 is unparalleled by anything before or after it. This is true for every single genre.

it means the game was bad but it succeeded to convince people it was good because of "technology" or "marketing".

At least, if you're using the term correctly.

Using it incorrectly is just what people do when they don't have an actual argument and want to claim it's the first thing for some reason.

Marketing campaigns doesn't last forever and the brainwashing fades away. Then one day you realize that your Citizen Kane of gaming actually sucks ass. Only good games will never "age".

GOAT platformer: Mario 64/Banjo Kazooie
GOAT FPS: Goldeneye
GOAT brawler: Smash Bros
GOAT action RPG: Ocarina of Time
GOAT turn based RPG: Paper Mario
GOAT RTS: StarCraft
GOAT builder: SimCity 2000
GOAT racing: Mario Kart 64
GOAT fighting: Mortal Kombat 4
Could go on and on, but yeah, the N64 has probably the best lineup ever, there's pretty much no reason to own another console except for movie games.

how can something fundamentally so disgusting taste so good

Elaborate

Have you ever tried to use something from antiquity and think "Of course no one uses these anymore. It's stupid."

Well there you go.

You sure you know how cheese is made?

It means that the game was always shit, but standards were lower back then so no one knew any better

I legit thought that OP thumbnail was some faded ancient japanese painting of some trees and a river

And there's a velociraptor for some reason

just fyi, that image is a gorgonzola aged perfectly. You are just too casual to apreciate it.

t. italian

Mechanics that were viable for the time, but have been surpassed. A perfect example is goldeneye 007 with it's single stick and buttons rather than dual sticks for aiming and shooting.

Based Pasta

It means some youngster tried it expecing something similar to his snoy movieshit, but it turned out it was an actual game and he hated it.

Why would you post blue cheese, which gets its flavor from mold?

no idea how that has anything to do with what i said

Go ahead play the original Wolfenstein and lie to my face that you had fun

It aged like shit

terraria thread?

I don't get blue cheese, all it tastes is bitter as fuck to me.

The game mechanics become archaic and outdated, sometimes in less than a few years after the game is released, pic absolutely related

Let's not get in the rabbit hole of defining a "badly aged game" game as a featherless-biped but think of some examples instead that should illustrate what people (or, at least, I) mean by that:
>Can't even run on modern hardware properly (the game outright not running natively, or issues like like text being unreadably tiny, or having latency compensation mechanisms that made sense when everyone was on dial-up but in actuality making the game feel more laggy when latency is Not having features that are now taken for granted, such as ability to do online multiplayer without virtual LAN
>Exhibits visual style that would be better implemented with contemporary tech and looks ugly when compared to modern games featuring a similar style (contrast that to games featuring sprite graphics that often look better than any contemporary sprite-based games, or text or ASCII based games that look roughly the same now as they did back then, and as such don't feel like they've "aged badly")
>Has other features that were technically impressive or novel at the time despite being a generally unremarkable game, but is no longer technically impressive or novel
>Has features that have nowadays been implemented much better in other games, to the point that the game has literally nothing to offer (it's simply obsolete, there are games that are direct upgrades in all aspects) or are distracting from the experience because you've gotten used to something much better (a very common issue with UI and controls), giving you a nagging feeling of "why do I even put up with this"

"Age badly" is a psyop to get people to buy new games that are just lame unfulfilling fetch quests with better graphics

Games age badly when the tradeoff that players needed to make is no longer justified.
Players have always known that Goldeneye had a bad frame rate, but they tolerated it because it was the only way to play a full 3D FPS on old consoles. People were willing to exchange good controls and a stable frame rate for the new experience.
Today this trade off is not necessary for the same type of experience, so the games that still require it are considered either bad (in the case of being modern) or dated (in the case of old games).

I just finally beat the original LoZ on the NSO emulator after decades of trying on and off. And that was only because of the Nintendo drought and quarantine. The game is impossible to play blind. There are so many things it doesn’t tell you.

Why is it fundamentally disgusting?

Best post so far itt

Same, I beat it a month ago, I had to rewind so many times in the final dungeons and boss battles but I finally beat it.

You're right about it being impossible to beat blind, like how the fuck was I supposed to know the 8th dungeon was behind a tree?

It makes for a good sauce

>GoldenEye
>When Perfect Dark exists
I want this meme to end.

Goldeneye is better because it released first. It's the one everybody remembers and therefore is teh bestest.

Gorgonzola is so fucking good.
