I have never seem a game deemed as a "success" refuse this much to show its actual sale numbers, even Kojima himself avoids mentioning sales figures and just vaguely say they "recouped development costs". So what? We don't know even how much this game cost (probably a considerable amount given the Hollywood talent in it), so that still doesn't give us a sales margin. You surpassed the amount to not be considerable a flop if you managed to recover dev costs, not the amount to be considered a sales hit, thats for sure.

I liked it as well, it was at least different than any other titled I've played in several years. Most of Zig Forums is pretty consistently disconnected from what will actually be successful or not, mostly due to autism and deeply rooted insecurities that encourage lashing out at anything they personally don't like.

If the best thing you can say about your game regarding sales is "it covered development costs" half a fucking year later, then that's when you know it didn't meet their expectations at all. It definitely didn't succeed as much as they wanted.

I'm imagining it was relating to the other game kojipro was working on during the latter portions of death stranding's development. I can't find the article but there was an interview where he mentioned they were planning on making that their next "large" release for the company.

but up until like a few months before the game came out we didn't even have a vague idea about the genre of the game, let alone any details. It was just "what drug trip is kojima going to give us a trailer for next"

Copies were being sold at a big discount literally one month after release. Couldn't they be lying? I liked the game and everything, currently have 200 + hours on it but I know a bunch of people didn't like it at all.

Surprise, it doesn't matter whether people like it, people bought it day 1. The first like two weeks of sales are the most important, especially for a game without dlc like death stranding. What you see is what you get, so people who wanted it bought it. Anything after the fact is just extra.
Note how the article in op doesn't say anything about WHEN it was profitable. For all we know it was profitable day 1. Unlikely sure but that's my fucking point. We don't know. It's pointless to speculate.
