The DS version looks terrible from what I've seen of it on Zig Forums.
64 has 90s cg art and is thus the automatic winner

compare the environmental lightning between the versions
If you really knew why some games have "soul" in them, you'd never want to play them ever again...
Ooooow, what have they done?
I'm noticing a trend of Nintendo having issues with lighting on Switch sequels and ports.
>bayo 2
>smash ult
>now xenoblade
What do you mean?
Well like op said, soul is not a meme
can't say anymore without them finding me
Friend area in a 2005 GBA/DS mystery dungeon game
vs
Friend area in a 2020 Switch mystery dungeon game
Right looks like it came out of a supply chain.
>(SOUL is Not a meme)
Well a random faggot on the internet said it so I guess it must be true
>can't say anymore without them finding me
Now you're stressing me out. Stay safe, and disable geolocalization on your phone.
The comes from the imprint of the designer onto the creation. You see the designers style and design idiosyncrasies come through in the art. Traced as it may be CWC's art has more soul than some modern nintendo games which all try to keep the same style from game to game. No character is ever off model, not enemy has deviated from their core design laid out in NSMB
>90's CG = SOUL
>no 90's CG = SOULLESS
it has a lot of graphical quality but the actual artstyle is worse to me
that seems to be a recurring pattern now, nintendo seems to be shifting from charming visuals to just flash looking ones but they still lack the actual hardware to make it worthwhile
Modern SOUL exists, though. It's just rarer.
It was a trade off. The rest of the game manages to be pretty loyal in terms of passion. But I do agree, I miss the friend areas
Left has more soul than right. Right is just trying to copy what has already been done in a very lazy way.
IT'S 90s NOT 90's! HOLY SHIT WHEN WILL PEOPLE STOP MAKING THIS MISTAKE?!
Left looks like something the game can't render
Right looks the same as actual gameplay
how does smash ultimate have issues with lightning?
I really hope the blue ray has the kino original design
Soulless
Runescape 3 vs 2 is the most striking example I can think of. If you shove off the microtransactions, it's not an inherently bad game in of itself if you don't mind grindy MMOs, but when comparing the two games together, RS3 is like a fucking goblin who tore off the face of RS2 and wears the skin as a mask pretending to be Runescape.
Bonus soul/soulless OST below, though I'll admit some of the newer tracks that aren't remakes of the old songs can be pretty good if they aren't one of the 800 ominous latin chant songs. RS3s song remakes love adding LE EPIC DRUMS to everything and fucking with the tempo regardless of how it effects the atmosphere of the area. My example below is the most striking example I can think of in regards to the OST not matching the atmosphere.

What? Left looked so horrendous that they had to redo every scene with the new one before release!
Name a more iconic duo than Square Enix and phone ports ported to PC.
What really bothers me is the fact that people are actually okay with these ports and don't mind playing them
Zoomer here, can vouch for these nostalgia fags that the art style/look on the left has way more character and is more memorable
Music is a good indicator as well.
I don't have obvious examples in mind right now but I remember a few games where tracks were murdered in their remakes.
Thanks for your input. (a respectable zoomer, a rare sight)
A fallacious counterargument that often comes back is the "rose-tinted glasses".

soul is when a dev cares about the product they're making and you can tell when partaking in said product. It is directly opposite to safe, sanitized, or publisher/marketing-pushed products.
So I assume they didn't port over the vertex lighting, since new engine uses a different system? Because Wii version light looks suspiciously like Vertex colors used to simulate a light system.
Damn.
