How can a game top OOT as the Consensus GOAT?
Like what would a newer game need to have in order to achieve all of these things? Or is it impossible now?
it needs to have its own fun sandbox, good lore and story, amazing soundtrack, and yea
play Witcher 3
It's have to break new video game grounds on all the levels Ocarina did, and be received as well.
You forgot about amazing gameplay. Explains the game you just mentioned. Tw3 sadly controls like dogshit, I tried getting into the game twice but I couldn't.
It has already been surpassed.
>fun sandbox
Show me the game that achieved all of those things, show me the 99% on Metacritic
it controls similarly to OoT and don't say it doesn't, they both feel clunky in the same way, and it makes sense to simulate the realism of carrying around equipment
OOT literally controls perfectly, zoomers cry because of the framerate but that's a non issue on Project64. OOT has no flaws, like many people have said, RE4 is the closest we will ever see to a game as acclaimed as OOT.
It's an absolute travesty that videogames haven't improved since 1998. That was 22 years ago. Most of Zig Forums wasn't born yet
Not impossible, but it would need to be completely transcendent. It would need to completely change they way we view and experience video games (which is exactly what OoT did at the time).
I could see the first really incredible VR title doing it, but I mean INCREDIBLE, not this Alyx tech demo horse shit. It would need to be so good it completely changes the landscape (ie ALL games being VR first and foremost afterward).
I think it would take a title with that kind of impact to really come close to supplanting OoT.
Nah, oot controls just fine. In tw3 yout character takes like 1 sec to start moving after you command him to and another second to stop likewise. The turning makes you bump into every conceivable object in existance. Combat is honestly pretty fine.
BOTW2 is the last chance honestly, the sequel literally needs to fix every single flaw in the original game, while telling a extremely memorable story & having a soundtrack full of timeless songs that people remember forever. The only thing mainstream & beloved enough to surpass Zelda is another Zelda game
A game already did seven years ago you disgusting newfag.
>BOTW2
Not gonna happen. Think about it, the core design concept of BotW is discovery, by the nature of even being a sequel 2 is going to be inferior. I expect it to play out exactly like Mario Galaxy 1/2 from a reception standpoint.
Knowing how nintendo works nowadays they probably won't fix botw terrible design flaws so botw2 will literally be botw's problems all over again. I sure hope I'm wrong tho
It has to be universally beloved, TLOU isn’t even regarded as the best game of 2013. GTA V is.
>seven years ago
you're both being disingenuous because Witcher and Zelda control the -exact same- way
There's a GTAV? Oh you mean that singleplayer shit that came with GTAO. Yea, no one cares about that.
Nope, BOTW2 will be a Galaxy 2 situation. The praise from journalists & mindless consoomers means that they won’t change much because why change what is successful. In the state of gaming with AAA western games dead & japanese games dying due to westernization nothing will ever come close to OOT. It’s like The Godfather, people will talk about it as the GOAT 30 years from now
No they don’t retard. Witcher controls like shit, OOT controlled so well that every game developer copied it’s gameplay mechanics in someway. Same with how every game uses the dialogue options thanks to KOTOR. Nobody is copying anything from Shitcher, it had no impact on the industry.
galaxy2mind
I don't think there's ever been a bigger step-down from how good those first three Zelda games were, and how mediocre OoT is.
I thought this as a fucking 12 year old, OoT is a lukewarm retread of pic related like holy fuck, did the entire world forget about LttP?
You have it backwards, OOT was so good that nobody gave a shit about the other Zelda games after it regardless of their high metascores. It wasn’t until BOTW came out that people started calling a Zelda game GOTY. Before OOT not a single Zelda game was in the goty conversation. OOT made the series relevant
What? No it doesn't. You have more freedom of movement in Ocarina of Time. I love The Witcher 3 but it definitely controls like an RPG whereas Ocarina of Time controls like an action-adventure game.
You're going to make that vore furry zoomer so fucking angry. He makes oot hate threads daily.
But Galaxy 2 was amazing, at least on the level of the first game.
The video game medium is stagnant as fuck there is nothing that’ll top oot in terms of being revolutionary, there hasn’t been a single revolutionary game this generation and next will be more of the same trite
Everyone with sense thinks AlttP is the masterpiece of the series. Everyone who isn't a sheep knows OoT is a pretender to the throne
There will never be a game that nails the recipe on new technology like this, Mario 64 did the same with 3D platformers.
The game was so totally transcendent and consistently good across the board that it would take a LOT to top that acclaim. The gameplay totally solidified the feeling of exploring a 3D world, the graphics were excellent (if not exactly the best possible) for the time, the soundtrack was so good it didn't feel dated even compared to the CD-based games also on the market, and the atmosphere, goddamn it was good. It was, no exaggeration, the most immersive 3D world created up to that point, while still feeling smooth and accessible. It struck just the right balance between challenging difficulty and mercy, though admittedly the game is a lot easier now that navigating 3D space on a screen is second nature to players. And that's on top of wealth of memorable locations and characters and items.
It's not totally perfect, Hyrule Field is a hell of a lot more sparse than A Link to the Past's overworld and there's not enough opportunities for the sword combat to shine. But it still deserves its reputation and you'd be hard pressed to top it.
Nobody gave a shit about ALTTP until Egoraptor’s sequalitist video, Nintendo America themselves had OOT ranked as the greatest game they ever published. Before OOT people were calling Tetris & Super Mario Bros 3 the GOAT
That would be Extremely hard, even for a new Zelda. It would have to do everything (gameplay, difficulty, music, story, graphics) above 8/10 AND be groundbreaking. Good luck with that!
Where the fuck have you been? ALTTP vs OOT shitflinging has been ongoing for more than twenty years. Egoraptr just expressed a really shitty argument backed by a mouthbreather fanbase.
It's not even the best nintendo game. Link to the Past and Super Metroid exist.
I get that it got a lot of things right for being an early 3D game and thus received a lot of praise for it, but it doesn't hold up as well as 2D classics.
It wasn't acclaimed as GOAT tier the way Ocarina of Time was but it was a beloved game, what the hell are you talking about?
It seems only Nintendo knows how to make good games but releases them on garbage hardware nowadays. Back then Nintendo was making competitive hardware. So never again unless we get a Nintendo game made for PC.
Nothing you said there is true.
Super Mario 64, far and away, is exemplary of one of the first 3D games that did all of those aspects well. It's a truly great and """revolutionary""" game.
OoT is a floundering, pale game. Comparisons to ALttP are unfair. ALttP is actually a game. It's challenging and fun. OoT isn't challenging or fun.
Think of how dynamic the 3D movement was in Mario 64 and how the player could find all sorts of ways to bounce around its levels, and compare it to the restrictive hand-holding snores of OoT's levels. You can see that the true early 3D genius was with the former
Wrong before OOT it was ALTTP that was the GOAT choice for most people. It was always extremely iconic & popular. It has always been a debate whether it was better than OOT.
>Switch is collecting dust
Don't fuck up Metroid Prime 4 or I'll never buy one of your toys again.
