Is it time to admit that Super Paper Mario was the last good title in the franchise?
It might have had some gimmicks (such as turning 3D) but it had a solid story with genuinely fun boss battles, secrets, and cool twists (such as Mr. L)
The only people that can't admit this have their head up Thousand Year Door's ass, or suffer from nostalgia
The last good Paper Mario game was none of them you absolute retard. Paper Mario is a children’s game and will never measure up to the pure storytelling and gameplay elements for any modern RPG titles.
other than breaking away from the RPG mechanics i still think it was actually enjoyable. i had a lot more fun with it than i did with stickerstar and colorsplash just looked fucking terrible
Sebastian Gomez
The original trilogy is great, the problem is the sticker trilogy
Henry Mitchell
SPM was a B among A+ games but nevertheless accpetable since it was just a fun spinoff at that point, plus it was awesome to cycle between Mario, Luigi, Peach and even Bowser in a game
Joseph Ward
>So? Care to take a whiff of the rich, yet delicate scent of my world-renowned feet?
I'll take SPM over the new games. It was fine, just had some balancing issues.
Jackson Smith
I disagree. Played super paper mario when it came out and while I thought it was a weird departure, the experience was cool.
Jack Gonzalez
>SPM Good >SPM fags shitting on TTYD for being actually good But nah hold on to the only thing that made your game good: a charming story like PM64 and TTYD had
Remember you defend the fall of this franchise solely on nostalgia, Wii sales hype/era, and some sad sap story. Nothing more. Nothing less.
Nah it was fucking shit. I dread every moment I spent playing it, thinking it will get good.
Gavin Allen
I played that shit when I was 11 dude and even I thought it was a step down from the original on the N64 I played a year prior thanks to the Wii VC.
It wasn't terrible, but it wasn't a Paper Mario game, but I guess at this point being a Paper Mario game doesn't mean it has to be a JRPG anymore.
Evan Price
Had a similar experience. Played SPM at 13, PM64 a little bit after, and TTYD when I was 19. In general I rank them as TTYD > PM64 > SPM.
SPM does have a lot of charm points but it feels shallow compared to the other games.
William Adams
>Super is good because the next two games are trash
no you mongrel. Super is the start of the bad games. TTYD was the last good game which is depressing because it was a solid 9/10 game just like 64. Who decided we should get a 5.5/10 game to follow up a masterpiece like TTYD? TOK looks like shit btw.
Eli Garcia
at this point i just say i'm a fan of the classic paper mario games rather than the paper mario series which is a shame but true when i dislike most of the series.
Aaron Harris
i wish TOK is good but im not expecting much
Cooper Powell
Just consider the original trilogy to be SMRPG , PM64 and TTYD. You will be much happier this way.
If you haven't looked into it and want to play another Paper Mario try downloading Paper Mario 64 Master Quest Junior. It's a hard mode version that includes new maps and new enemies and even new bosses. I've died to many of the bosses on my first two tries.
Dominic Walker
Superstar Saga is the real SMRPG sequel though as it was made by the same team.
Nathaniel Campbell
Paper Mario > Bug Fables >= TTYD > Super >>>>> Color Splash >> Sticker Star
Xavier King
You rank Bug Fables >= TTYD? Damn, I already bought it, but I really need to play it now.
Samuel Ramirez
yeah i was recommended that hack on a previous paper mario thread, downloaded it but haven't played yet.
Also i gotta be honest i didn't enjoy SMRPG much, but i can see what people like about it, unlike SPM where i feel like its really overrated.
Gabriel Clark
Superstar Saga is surprisingly good and it was recommended to me on Zig Forums many moons ago when it was still new. I haven't seen anybody talk about it IRL and I know a lot of people who like SMRPG and TTYD. It feels like when I first discovered Mario RPG as a kid with all of the fun gameplay mechanics and unique enemies.
Yep. TTYD is great but I still prefer 64 over it because of the desert level, the jungle level and the ice level. TTYD is fun but it feels like too much is a direct copy from 64 and the ice world was a huge let down. The ghost town was fucking awesome though.
Isaac Thomas
I don't understand what exactly people hate about Super Paper Mario. It's basically the same formula as the other two but with the rotating gimmick. I thought the bad guys were some of the most interesting antagonists since Cackletta in SSS also.
Kayden Hernandez
The entire mario and luigi series is great, even what many consider the worst game in the series (paper jam) is still a good time. BiS in particular is my second favorite of the mario rpgs after TTYD.
Parker Ward
I feel like people enjoying SPM is grasping at straws because the gameplay is dead simple and it has no characteristics of the first two (three) games. It has a unique mechanic with the 3d view but the time limit ruins it.
The PM64 hack is a must play. You can even skip the intro where the castle lifts off and you have to fight bowser by talking to a toad at the castle party. You wake up in the woods by the Goomba village. You also start with the timed hits badge and the extended spin badge costs 0bp so you can move quicker.
Grayson Morales
Bug fables > paper mario > ttyd > shit > super >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> color splash > sticker star
I really like bug fables, better mechanics and the three character dynamic is a lot more fun than silent Mario + partner that has a personality during one chapter +1 goomba with a personality
Jacob Richardson
>take a series that uses turn based RPG gameplay >turn it into a platformer but you can also get experience points >battles consist of jumping on an enemy and insta winning
If they changed the way the exp points are given or how the battles work then it might have been good. The story and the 3d gimmick were okay especially since it was a platformer but they really went in a weird direction with the gameplay after three successful RPGs.
I wish the other M&L games were as good as Superstar Saga. In general none of them are quite as content-packed or satisfying. Bowser's Inside Story and Dream Team are fun though.
For me its the poor character and world designs, the story that does not even try to use the mario characters outside of the whole bit with the chaos heart (or whatever the black heart was called), and the incredibly bland gameplay which is really strange considering 2d mario had already been figured for a long time before the game came out.
Noah Fisher
I wouldn't be surprised if SPM was the result of a Japanese playtester telling them TTYD was more fun when you use the First Strike badge to autokill things.
Isaac Gomez
Also il throw out my ratings
>PM TTYD > 64 >>>>>>>>>>>>> Super = SS (no i'm not kidding or baiting, its fine if you disagree) > CS
>M&L BiS > SS > PJ > PiT > DT
Jose Cox
They could have made the overworld be what it is but touching an enemy started a TTYD style battle.
Because I bought the game as a kid not knowing it wasn't a turn based rpg anymore and kept waiting for it to turn into one. I kept telling myself "it's only gonna be like this for the this stage then it will go back".
Angel Walker
i really don't get the thought process of making a platformer of a rpg spinoff of a platform series.
Connor Reyes
>girls fawn over Mario constantly throughout TTYD >Goombella and Vivian BOTH almost confess their love for him at the end but hold themselves back
