I grew up with GSC and loved every game up until gen 6, but HGSS always felt so bland to me. It's the same exact game with more content, but it just doesn't feel as fun or satisfying to play as the originals despite being mechanically superior. Is this what true soul feels like in a game?

With 2D games, sprites were just a representation, not based on an actual scale. An Oddish in the overworld had the same size as much larger Pokemon.
You need proportions and scale in 3D games.
