How about a character that’s interesting and relatable and has a personality not centered around how gay they are but also happens to have a partner of the same gender that’s also interesting and relatable and has a personality not centered around how gay they are

Surprising as it may be, I liked Dorian in Dragon Age Inquisition. Him being a big old homo wasn't his defining character trait, being someone from Tevinter that WASN'T a hand-rubbing psychopathic bastard was. Anons tell me that his personal quest was a lot on the nose about his sexuality, but for some reason it never triggered for me, so I don't know. But I was genuinely surprised that through all of the game he was this pretty alright banter-slinging bro that even made a few points in favor of his homeland [including, yes, the fact that slavery is legal there].
You really wouldn't know that if you went by his dumb pre-release material alone.

The hot spot both sides miss is that being gay DOES affect you, but it doesn't define you. The only difference between a gay guy and a straight guy might be whether or not he sucks dick, but that means more than what he does in the bedroom. It affects how he engages with men and women, and more often than not, it affects the sort of life experiences he went through.
Japan is bizarrely way better about dealing with gays than the west for I don't know why the fuck. When they insert a gay character they make it clear that the sexuality matters and that the character wouldn't have worked if he was just straight, but they don't make it the character's all consuming purpose either.

1. Don't make every single character romance-able and don't make the player character an irresistible chad, this makes your NPCs seem weak-willed and only there for your player, and cheapens the gayness because everyone is gay

2. If their gayness is not incidental, give it a good reason to not be so

3. If the gay character exists in a far future open utopia don't give them current day gay problems, it undercuts the setting and coming up with a utopian gay problem is potentially interesting (eg Watchdogs type future where everyone has their stats available to everyone else and gay people are targeted by a fash government or some shit)

4. Jokes about being gay are not only good, they are essential. Every character gets joked about except the gay one who exists in a joke-free void

5. Make a fucking couple in a video game for god's sake. Just a normal, happy, jokey gay couple would be leaps and bounds ahead of whatever shit they're putting in games now. I can't think of a single couple, gay or straight, that's not in a Stardew type game.
